#46827, "BnT 2014 Year in Review"

Bass-n-Tubes 2014 season was a good one. Club membership was higher than ever at 29 paid members. This year we welcomed 7 new members and 2 new ‘junior’ members to the club. Participation in tournaments was higher than ever, with an average of 19 anglers per tourney. And qualifying for the TOC went to the end and was as close as it has ever been.
It was a great year for the club and I am happy to say I got to be part of it. I made some new friends and was able to compete against some great anglers.

Here is a, not so brief, rundown of how the year went from beginning to end.

The 2014 season started in traditional fashion with a two day event at Lake Nacimiento on February 22nd & 23rd. Nineteen competed and Taylor Capilla would win at Naci, with a respectable 15.32 pounds for the weekend. Bryan Vogt would take second place and the day 1 big fish with a 2.74 pound Naci Spot. The day 2 big fish was Robert Linden’s 1.78 pound giant.

Second on the BnT schedule was Salt Spring Valley Reservoir on March 16th.
Salt Spring Valley had twenty four anglers and was a new location for the club. Mitch Teman would take the win here with 23.39 pounds. Taylor Capilla was second and had the big fish with a 5.17 pound chunk.
With many limits, and good weights the club consensus is ‘we should come back here’!

April 26th & 27th was the 14th annual “Clear Lake Open” and the third stop on the 2014 schedule. Jon Graves smoked the field, on his way to setting a new 10 fish limit record weight for the “Open”, with 45.97 pounds total weight and the tournament big fish on day 2 at 8.94 pounds. Robert Middleton had day one big fish at 7.04 pounds and was the highest BnT finisher, which earned him 50 points in the AOY race. Second on the BnT side was Jeff Wilson.

On to the Delta and Middle River on May 18th for the fourth tourney of the year. Eighteen anglers showed up on the levee at one of BnT’s favorite locations. At the end of the day Mitch Teman wound up on top by a mere 0.07 pounds with 15.58 pounds of delta bass. Big bass went to second place finisher Rob Linden with a fat 8.13 pounder.

Stop number five on June 22nd was King Island Resort in the Delta. Half way through the season and there were nineteen anglers itching to do battle in the Delta again. Joe Agrillo was the man to beat at King Island. Joe had 15.63 pounds for the win and a 7.36 pound kicker to earn the big fish $$$ also. Second place went to wily old BnT veteran Dave “Swampy” Ryle.

On July 12th & 13th was the Bass Tackle Depot/Delta Outdoors Open. We had eighteen guys competing and this year we mixed things up a bit. Saturday evening we fished a sundowner, launching at 3pm and coming to weigh in at 9pm. Sunday we launched at first light and fished the morning bite. Jeff Wilson used his trusty drop shot to put together two solid limits to take the win with 26.98 pounds. Second place went to Taylor Capilla.
Big fish on day 1 went to Rob Linden and to Jeff Wilson on day 2.

The seventh tournament of 2014 took place at Middle River for a Sundowner on August 23rd. Sundowners are popular and 22 guys came out to take advantage of the evening bite in the Delta. Daniel Balaba took home the first place prize money with a solid 15.51 pounds. And always lurking near the top with another second place finish and the big fish at 8.42 pounds was Taylor Capilla.

September brings BnT to Clear Lake again to fish the SCBBBC ‘State Kick boat Classic’.
On The 20th & 21st of September thirty seven kick boaters descended on the world famous Clear Lake looking for that huge bag of fish. Daniel Balaba would make it two in a row with 31.43 pounds to earn the ‘Classic’ victory. Daniel came from behind with a huge 22+ pound second day limit, of 4 fish, to steal the win. In second on the BnT side was, yet again, Taylor Capilla.

On October 17th eighteen anglers fished Lake New Hogan, another new location for BnT. The results were mixed with a few guys with limits and a few more without. At the end of the day 11.14 pounds was enough for Mitch Teman to get the win. Second place went to BnT rookie Scott Bernardo. The day’s Big fish was caught by Topper De La Rosa with a nice 3.47 pound bass. With few limits and small weights the club consensus is ‘let’s get outta here’!

With the season over it was Taylor Capilla taking the 2014 Angler of the Year award with 381 points. Taylor had one 1st place, four 2nd place finishes and finished out of the top five only once all year on his way to his 6th AOY title. Congrats Taylor on another strong year with BnT.

The TOC race had some stiff competition this year. We had 2 new BnT anglers that fished strong all year and qualified for the TOC in their rookie year with the club. Scott Bernardo was the top finishing new member securing the rookie of the year title and Topper De La Rosa also made the cut. Congratulations to all the TOC qualifiers.

We ended the season where it began at Lake Nacimiento on November 8th and 9th for the TOC. A perfect fall weekend greeted the anglers and Daniel Balaba finished the year with the win and a total weight of 13.31 pounds of Naci Spots. Daniel also scored day one and tournament big fish with a 1.82 pound Naci giant. Second place was Jeff Wilson, and this year’s AOY champ Taylor Capilla was third. Taking day 2 big fish was Topper De La Rosa’s 1.62 pound toad. The BBQ Saturday evening was tri-tip and teriyaki chicken, chili, garlic bread, salad, cookies and cake. We had way too much food.

Most of you know this is my last year as President of the club and Jeff Wilson is taking over the presidential duties. I will still be involved just not the pres anymore. I know we will all support Jeff the same way I have been over the years and BnT will prosper.

I want to thank everyone who participated with BnT over the years and all of our great sponsors.
I especially want to thank those members who have helped out with the running of the club.
They are… Chris Pochop the TD, Rob Linden your Asst TD, Oscar Baeza club marketing and securing sponsorships, Jeff Wilson VP (soon to be P), and last but not least Taylor Capilla who has been my VP as well as a TD during his time with BnT. Thanks also to anyone I have missed and to all those who have chipped in at the tourneys to help make things run smooth. Your help is always appreciated.
I personally want to thank Rob Linden for all the extra help he has provided to me over the last couple of years. Rob works tirelessly behind the scenes placing trophy orders, securing release boats, getting TOC shirts printed, etc. etc., and has made my job as President an easy one.

I look forward to seeing everyone on the water for BnT’s 2015 season.

MT
