I started this season with some goals. First was to get wood second was to get a new personal best. I did both !!
This tourney I really did my homework. I read every report I was able to find and talked to everyone I knew. I put a game plan together and went for it. When I got to the launch I got confused on which way to go. Made up my mind and went against the tide. I knew that it was a very small tide and it wasn't going to be a tough row. I knew there was a reaction bite so I started throwing a black and brown chatterbait with a gold blade. Nothing for about 30-45min so I started throwing a blade, then a crankbait then senko and jig and. Well you get the point. I had 10 rods and started shuffling through them. I picked the chatterbait back up and first cast got one 12 3/4 inches. Two casts later a 1.5 Couple more casts another about 1.7. Then I picked up a black blue punch rig and started punching some hyecinth nothing. Dropped the same rig in front of the weed line and bam. A 2.3 so I stuck with that a while with no results. I decided to row across and fish an island where Steve was fishing the opposit side. I thought I may be able to find some bigger size and I did. 2 casts in I got nailed a4.5. About 10 Cast later I got another about 2. I had my limit. I alternated between the rocks and tulies and seemed dinks liked the rocks better so I stuck with the tulies. At this point I knew the tide was about to turn and I don't like outgoing tide. I fished a big flat very thoroughly and criss crossed a bunch of casts trying to get every angle. One Cast was parallel with the tulies and bam. Stopped me from reeling so I set the hook and It loaded up. I knew it was a good size but was just weight. Not the fight I expected till I saw the fish and it decided to peel line. Now I'm praying it doesn't come off cause I saw it. It was big. Short fight and in the net. WOOOO !!! Some heard me. Right Steve. He was still on the opposite side of the island. It took every bit of me to not weight it. I didn't want a repeat of Cleat Lake so I pulled out my smallest fish and put the big fish in and Put a bungee on. Thought it was about 10 and was pretty sure it was BF. I had 11.49 and culled a1.5 plus the ten I figured about 20lbs. I wanted so bad to pull the fish out to get a weight but didn't. I couldn't even fish I was shaking so bad. Well tide was dropping along with my confidence. Started dropping a senko through tweed holes and had a bite. Set the hook and immediately started peeling line and popped off. At this point it was about 12:30-1:00. That was the last bite I had until it was time to go.
I had a freakin blast. Was the absolute best tournament of all time for me. Hoping to upgrade on a PB again.

Great report Sal! That was a good time! I am going to have surgery tomorrow on my thumb so I was stoked to get a quick tournament in. It was good to be back and see everyone.

I started on the wall across from where we launch and wanted to work my way down to that pipe like I always do. I started with a buzz bait while I was moving listening for that splash but no luck. Once I got to the pipe I threw the wacky senko into the current and let it drift by a couple times then got on the other side and bounced it against the current and felt a good solid bite. I set the hook and knew it was heavy and thought it might be buried in the grass. It never jumped or came up so I never saw it until I scooped it in the net. Starting the day with a 6 is not bad. I caught a few more small fish but all short. Met up with Taylor a few hundred yards down and we jumped over to the other side. He was fishing the wall and I was on the islands. I started getting the 13"-1lb variety of fish pretty quick so I had a limit by 8am. I saw Sal catch one fish off the wall and heard Taylor catch a few so I figured we were catching the same kind of fish. A little later I was in this little bay around one of those islands and I hear this mad man screaming that was echoing through the whole delta. Once I got around the island I see that it was Sal. I figured I better start upgrading. I slowly culled up maybe a pound or two around the islands in the next few hours only to have that same screaming break the peace and quiet again only this time it seemed a little more intense. I could see him shaking through the tullies! I don't think he could even hold a rod for the next ten minutes! Nice job Sal! Seems like you are always good for a big fish. I only upgraded a few more times for ounces then headed back. I couldn't have asked for a better day right before a six week break. Well done to you as well Max! I hope to see you guys in a few more this year.

WAY TO GO, CONGRATULATIONS MR. CASTRO! I think the best part of a Tourney win is the drive home.
Reflecting and remembering how it all came together. Thinking over the decisions that were made - what worked and what paid off. Replaying the casts to hits, and the battles of the fish, as they found their way into the net.
Taking another look at the awards on the seat next to you, on your drive home, brings on a big smile .

YEA, MAN, IT's a nice feeling. May it be the first of many.

JC

Sal I heard you too x(

Super happy for you! Long overdue!

I was fishing on the other side of the slough, fishing the rock/tulies on the shoreline. All my big bites came on clean riprap in between tule clumps. I had a 12lb limit by 10 am. Lost a huge fish on a jerkbait. I never saw it, but it had me doubled over most the time and at the boat...pop! The fish I did catch on a jerkbait were back hooked, so they were pretty lethargic. Even If I did catch that fish, I dont think it would of been enough to over take the screamin' sal!

Around 11am I was able to cull a rat for a 2lber on the jerkbait fishing the island side, giving me ~13.5lb limit. Moments later I heard Sal, landed his kicker and I lost the lead for good!

Congrats again! Big fish 3 peat at CL?
