1249, Dana Point bassing, sat. 12/23

I fished Saturday 12/23 with Steve Conner on my 15 Gregor, Bassomatic. We launched at 6am but were met with the heavy fog that was predicted. A quick run to the harbor entrance told us it was way too dangerous to even think of going outside--total radar material. Nonetheless, we saw a few unequiped folks
head out anyway. It was so stinking cold and damp we opted for a hot breakfast at the Jolly Roger--good call. At 815am, the fog lifted enough to be safe and we started fishing the Dana Pipe. We began a slow pick on mixed bass to 2 pounds using mostly 4 inch Big Hammers in halloween and brownback/purple/silver belly. Steve got few on a power grub. We then ran south to a couple hardbottom spots for the same kind of action on a 50/50 mix of calicos and sandies. The fish came from 45-60 feet and wanted only the 4
inch Hammers, 5 inch was too big today. Best retrieve was a slow one of 5-6 cranks followed by a freespool drop with most bites coming on the drop portion. The big swell showed up, too which ruled out fishing in tight. Water was 57.8-59.2 and just offcolor green. All 20 or so we bass we caught were released. We were done by 12 noon.
