14355, Dana Point Double-Digit Calico Birthday Party 6-15!

I scored a day to fish for my birthday and decided to try Dana. Keith Michael joined me and we headed up the line at 6 AM. Salt Creek was dead except for one lone calico on the iron. A stop further up put us on a slow pick for 1.5 to 2.5 calicos until 7:30 when I landed a 6 lb. 4 oz. calico on a crankbait.

That bite slowed but before we left, Keith had a huge bass slam his jig only to have the fish flip it out of its mouth before it stuck. We traveled further up to another area when on my second cast I got my new personal best; a 10 lb. 5 oz. calico on surface iron! I would have never imagined catching a fish like this, especially along the coast.

We hung around the general area in hope of scoring some more larger units. About 10:30 I got a 8 lb. 6 oz. calico on the surface iron. I'm loving the iron!

So, it turned out to be quite a birthday party with some very distinguished guests. We C and R'd 40 or so bass between us, all calicos except 2 sand bass. Water was 67.5 and clean to off-color green. 90% of our fish were on Candyman and Salas surface iron. The red tide is gone so get out there!
