They occur a lot farther north than that. I've seen them in the Monterey Bay area quite often. Whether or not they like the beach at San Simeon, I don't know. I've never seen them at Pismo even though my family would vacation there every other year for 1 to 2 weeks. Ask at a local bait shop and they should be able to tell you.
