Planned on another go at the lings at the spot I discovered on the pipe 2 weeks ago. Launched near the pier about 7:30 a.m., and tried pitching 3" plastics along the beach for a while. After having 6 of them bit off, I finally boated one of the culprits, to satisfy my curiosity. Damn tomcod...

Since the heavy fog was drifting in and out, I worked my way toward Campus point, in search of a halibut, but only got a few more tomcod. Tried soaking some squid but got only kelp & eelgrass. Spoke to another yakker and two fisherpersons in a canoe who had about the same luck, with one short butt.

Out near the point talked to another yakker who said he had gotten a short wsb on a chovy.

I decided to troll out to the pipe to see if the lings were still there. About 1/3 of the way from the point to the pipe, I got a couple of hits on a trolled 4" fishtrap, and then got a hookup. To my surprise, I pulled in a 12" bonito, first bonito I've seen this far north. I switched to a fastrac to see if I could find any larger models, but only got two more dink bonito of about the same size. Good to see them anyway.

Trolled a little further and had a very solid hookup. Whatever it was pulled out a lot of line for 10 seconds and then was gone. Since I was pulling a lure with three trebles and all were intact when I reeled in (and I was in the area with the small bonito) I am guessing maybe I briefly tailhooked a thresher.

Got to the pipe and found the ling/rockfish spot that produced 2 weeks ago. Worked it for 40 minutes or so for nothing, not even a decent hit, before calling it a day.

Over & out.
