13063, Morro Bay Barred Perch
Posted by capsman36, Fri Dec-17-04 01:52 PM
Had a chance to get away last Sunday afternoon, so I drove over to Morro Bay and fished the incoming tide Monday morning. I caught 17 perch including this 14.5 (personal best) and 12 incher. Landed 3 others that were 11 - 12 inches and the rest were about 6 - 8 inches. All on 2" grubs in 3 different colors and brands. Wish I could of stayed another day. It was beautiful weather and was really nice to get out of this Central Valley fog for a little while. Looking forward to going back over after Christmas for a couple of days.

Happy Holidays to everyone! Mike

Nice slab perch! What kind of retrieve was working? Basic Carolina rig?

Yes, Carolina rig. 1/2oz sinker, #6 hook on 12lb line and just pulling it in slow kinda like fishing a plastic worm. I don't how many grubs they bit the tail off of, but they didn't seem to care. I'd throw it back out tailless and they still chewed it up. Lotta fun!

Were you scenting them? If so, with what?

No I didn't use any scent. They're salt impregnated though. I used Kalin's, Bass Pro Shops Squirmin' Grubs and some I bought at Virg's Landing in Morro Bay. I'm not sure what brand they are. Their listed as a Big Hammer retailer but the bins weren't marked. They have a real skinny tail compared to the other grubs.

Berkley Power Grubs work great too....Glad to see it picking up on the Perch. Oceano is another really hot spot. Catching 30+ in a couple of hours is no problem (That was last Feb.). True about the tail less grubs...some guys along here pull the tails off them selves to avoid those missed bites.

Bassin, I went down to Pismo/Oceano Sunday and just drove down the beach at low tide. I haven't fished there in a couple of years but have done good there too.

I haven't tried tubes Wade but definitely am next time. I think they would work great. I wonder if the hollow bodies would stay on the hook better? Have you tried them?

Yeah, Carolnia rigged tube. I guess they might actually slide up the leader though? Maybe Carolina rigged on a 1/32oz jighead?

I haven't used the Power grubs myself. But the colors I used were Pumpkin/Pepper, Motoroil/Red Flake and Smoke/Silver Flake.

Yep, Pumkin was workin great in the Oceano area. What part of Morro Bay were you in, by "the Rock"....or North?

North of "The Rock", about a half mile or so. And I also caught some further north where the oil pier used to be.

I know that spot, the old Exxon pier?...I have seen guys fishing there before. So you eat those Perch? I know a lot of people do, a guy thought I was crazy to be C&R all the big ones I was getting one day. How do you cook those up? I might have to bring supper home for the woman some time...

Yeah that's the spot. I release most of them too, but do like to eat them. I like to fry 'em. I take saltine crackers and grind them up in a blender and mix about 50/50 with cornmeal and add salt/pepper. The hotter the oil, the better they are. I've fried them too without the coating. Season them with salt, lemon pepper, a little garlic salt, pepper, rosemary (whatever seasonings you like) and just enough olive oil in the pan to keep them from sticking. They're a little softer than like halibut or rockfish but they're good.
