19, July 3, 1999 Goleta Beach

Today we finally made it out to check out the Goleta Beach float tube scene. We launched at 1pm and the high tide was around 2:30. It was overcast with some current coming off the beach. Waves were small and there was a slight breeze. The water felt pretty cold still, especially for July, but this has been a late year in general. We started in front of the stairs and fished up towards the point. With 4 guys you would have thought that we would have at least caught a calico or something but it was completely dead. After a while my dad and James headed in but Brian and I stayed out. Brian hooked a solid fish not long thereafter. He thought it was kelp initially but when it came alive he realized it was a halibut. Unfortunately it broke him off on 10lb test. We worked our way in planning on calling it a day when I finally got bit on the 4" green sardine colored fish trap with a 1/2 oz head. The fish was shallow (5-7 feet of water) so I made a few more casts and caught another short about 16". In the next 1/2 hour I landed three more and farmed a couple. No size to them but it beat getting skunked. Around 4:30 we called it a day.
