Fished with my buddy Brett today out of the Toad Hunter--a 12 foot aluminum jon boat. We started off the bait reciever and whacked a bunch of tomcod and smelt on drop shots and small swimbaits. Moved over to the island and fished the rocks and kelp with spinnerbaits. We had 5 small calicos on the spinnerbaits and had a few other short strikes. Pretty fun all around. The key seemed to be slow rolling the blade throught the kelp.

Ended up the day with a few more smelt off the bait receiver and some cocktails and lunch at the Wind&Sea! I could get used to this!

That place is fun isn't it? If it's REALLY calm (due your boat's size/low freeboard) you could sneak to the outside and try the spotty hardbottom and the Pipe for some bass and 'buts. You'll need to watch wind chop and boat wakes though. If you have a graph, just run parallel to the long section of the jetty as you head out the mouth and south. You'll see a big hump on your meter about 150-200 yds. from the harbor, that's it. It runs from there (about 30 ft.) out to about a mile (maybe less), like an underwater jetty.

Fongster,

Thanks for the tip. I will have to check that out sometime in a different boat! I can't leave the harbor in the toad hunter! I almost got swamped over the weekend with the boat show going on...lots of big wakes for the harbor!

Are there any good maps of all the local reefs and structures? Where do you buy it?
