2257, Suggested Albacore Rigs?

Hey Guys,
I just found out my dad and I are going on an albie trip in San Diego next weekend. It seems one of my dad's beach diving buddies got a boat and they want us to go! I dont know the size of the fish but I think they are in the 15-30# range. I can only bring 2 rods so let me know what you think.
Penn Jigmaster 500 with 25# line and a Penn Power Stick(not my choice, it was a Christmas present) rated 20-40, for jigs and FTs

The other is a Penn Senator 4/0 with a Calstar BT660 rated 20-50 with 40# line for bait.
As you can see, I know nothing about this type of fishing. Thanks in advance for any input.
Tommy

I would do it the other way around. Use the 500 for bait, or fish traps. And use the 4/0 for iron, or trolling (depending on if the guy with the boat has the rigs).

Try trolling a fish trap in the middle of the spread, real close to the boat, in the 1st wake, or even in the prop wash.

Good luck.

Yeah, they like Fishtrap trolled close! I just got back from Cabo, and the schoolie YFT couldn't leave the FT alone! Drop them back on the slide after a jig strike, that's $$$$$!

I agree with the other two posts. Use the new P-line Floroclear 25# on the 500. Perfect for bait. Then use the other for the trolling, iron, and bait (if they are WFO).

Have fun,

Hey Amish Ed
What have been your experiences with Floroclear? I've been contemplating trying some out after learning more about it working on the new p-line.com site.

My experience, and that of the people I've sold to has been great. Very tough, yet very thin. I don't think the floro coating makes a difference, but the diameter is so thin and the line so limp that I just had to try it. I have no complaints about it. Before now I had always disliked P-line, but this line is great. I will say though, that my experience is limited to 25# and 30#. I have talked to many who used the smaller ones and they were very happy. Try it, the worst thing that can happen is you'll decide it's not for you.

Hmmm what would Rob want with low-vis 30#??? TROUT PLUGS!!! hehe. I just ordered a spool of 25 and 30 for my 3.5 day. I'll report how it performs. I read over the site too, and I'm a believer already!

Thanks for all the helpful responses. Anyone ever catch albies on the retrieve with FTs? Sounds like a blast. I ate the last of my halibut yesterday so my freezer is hurtin'.

i haven't but people do. just cast it out, feed it line (say 100 pulls) and then slowly crank it in if you don't get hit on the sink.
