Thanks,

Andrew,
I know that threshers have been caught off the Pismo pier and other piers in that area in the past. If you've heard that they have been catching them there then I would definetly go try it. As far as leopards, I have caught countless numbers of leopards off the north side of Morro rock. Inside the bay is also good for catching sharks from shore, with the back bay probably being the best. Right now is prime time too! A good thing about fishing in the bay is there are tons of shovlenose sharks and batrays to keep it interesting along with leopards mixed in. Those are the best places I know of, if you need more specific info on bait, tackle, tides etc... please reply and I will be happy to post everything I know about shark fishing.-Phil

Phil, let me know if you would be interested in going on a fishing trip someday soon.

I am an experienced shark fisherman from the SF bay area so you wouldn't have to teach me too much.

Thanks,

Andrew

Hello all,

I have been fishing in morro bay recently and have caught some smaller silver fish on swimbaits. Anyone know what kind these are. probably twelve to fifteen inches. I have only caught rays in morro bay and would someday hope to catch a halibut.

Do you know if I am running out of time to catch halibut in the bay?
I was also fishing from my kayak up at san simeon this weekend. Lots of active fish, and dolphin.

I am new to kayak fishing and would enjoy some company and any knowledge you can pass along. Kinda of erie out there by myself. None of my freinds will go because they are fearful of great whites.
I have never heard of a kayaker getting munched(knock on wood).

catch ya later

Nate,
I have to say I don't know what the halibut are doing right now. My last three or four trips have been unsuccesful. I was out yesterday in the bay and only got one bite on a swimbait. On several of my retreieves I saw smelt following the bait in, which is probably the silver fish you have been catching. Smelt can get up to 15" and bigger, they look basicly like an oversized anchovie only their backs are bluish green. Does this sound like the fish you have been catching? -Phil

I do know of ONE shark attack on a kayaker. It happened off of Ano Nuevo, south of SF- a big elephant seal area. It knocked the person out of the boat, but the person was not injured I believe. I think I read about it on the BASK (Bay Area Sea Kayakers) website.

I fish a lot from Avila to San Simeon, mostly for Rockfish/lings, but some shark/rays and halibut too. I'm always looking for others to go with, as I usually go out alone. E-mail me at needlesa@hotmail.com if you're interested.

Hey Andy let me know whenever you want to go shark fishing.
I heard you can get some big sharks by casting off Cayucos beach.
How is Cayucos?

For Phil the shark fisherman:

I have had a pretty decent couple of weekends taking shovelnose of the beach here in Santa Barbara but would like to know all about hooking up with some leopards and big bat rays. What can you tell me?

gef,
I'm not sure of any locations around Santa Barbara to hook up with sharks and rays, but I can give some advice on targeting them. The setup I use is a penn jigmaster spooled with 30lb on a 9ft shimano big game rod. I also use surf rods with spinning reels, so basically any rod that you can cast a fair distance with 25-30lb line would be good. The rig I use is a 3-4oz weight, steel leader and 2/0-3/0 octopus hook. For bait I think mackarel works best, frozen is fine, but it's even better when its freshly caught. Squid works well too, and will stay on the hook a little better. It also seems like the batrays favor squid over mackarel for some reason. For obvious reasons, fishing for them at night is almost always better. Although I have done really good on overcast days as well. I think maybe they just become more active in low light conditions, even if it's in the middle of the day. If you need any more info i'll be happy to help. Also if anyone wants specific locations I could probably come up with some street names and directions. -Phil
heres a pic of one I caught awhile back on the north side of Morro rock
