342, June 6, 2000 SB Harbor

After fishing the Stardust mid-day I decided to go hit up the harbor for the evening bite. I only had till 6:45 and I didn't get out until 5:15 but the seabass were snapping and I nailed 8 on the swimbaits. It was just like old times when Jamon and I used to go down there and get 'em. Four of the fish were 26" clones but no keepers. It was fun, I got them on my 7'10" loomis on 20lb triple fish. Now that's how to get the job done.

Thanks for the report, Rob. Pete and I are planning a run down to the harbor on Tuesday evening. It is Pete's birthday and I think a legal WSB is in order.
Pete and I are also going to tube Goleta Beach Saturday afternoon as the tide is conducive to a good bite:
2000-06-10 5:45 PDT Sunrise
2000-06-10 11:53 PDT 0.56 feet Low Tide
2000-06-10 18:43 PDT 5.13 feet High Tide
2000-06-10 20:10 PDT Sunset

Good incoming tide all afternoon.
If anyone wants to join us Saturday, we'll be hitting the water around 2:00 and staying until about 7:00.
Mike

344, How was it

Mike & Pete
How was Goleta on Thurs? Somethin tells me the weather may have put things off a bit but it should be getting better in again in the next few days. That tide did look conducive for a good bite.

Hi Rob,
I didn't make it out Thursday, but headed out with Pete Saturday afternoon. I caught 14 short halibut, mainly on the Rebel. Pete caught a few more than I, along with one keeper around 24". I know Pete went out one evening last week (think it was Wednesday) and got 6 fish with one legal at 26".
I also headed out for just a couple of hours on Sunday afternoon, but the swell was up and weeds were everywhere. Still managed 5 shorts, but had to removed crap from my lure virtually every cast.
What rod are you going to get to replace your broken 9'?
Mike

Rob,
Were you throwing that heavy Fishtrap again? Same retrieve?
Pete
You can't catch tomorrow what you kill today - please practice catch and release.

if rob's throwing plastic for seabass, chances are it'll be a 5" bait with a heavy leadhead.
-Brian
349, baits and retrieves

The bite was pretty good and when they're biting it becomes less important what you're fishing or how you're retrieving it. I caught fish on the 5 and 5.5 inch fish traps with 3/4, 1oz, and 1.5oz heads. Some of the fish were on the straight wind and other ones were dragging it pretty slow along the bottom (caught 2 on 2 casts like this when it was biting good.) You just have to think, "I am a stupid anchovy that just fell out of the bait receiver, I am a stupid anchovy that just fell out of the bait receiver..... and repeat.
350, Think like the bait!

Perfect description, Rob - I always try and to that!
You can't catch tomorrow what you kill today - please practice catch and release.
