I was down in San Diego this last weekend with my parents on vacation. Since I didn't have enough time to go for albacore and I was anxious to fish I hopped on a twilight boat out of Islandia. Felt like a dumbass renting a rod but figured it would be funny for the crew to see some guy throwing a tady 45 on a 7 foot barni blaster rod. Anyway, the boat was nice, the Dolphin, an 85 footer which I think fishes half-day and twilight. Captain sounded a little grumpy on the way out and I soon figured out why when the deckhand said I picked a bad week to come out what with a 4 degree water temp drop to 64 degrees. We went south about a half hour and started fishing in 70 feet. Right away some mackrel and short (real short) cuda's caught. I got bit on the iron first cast by a small cuda but missed it. After the first half hour the fishing basically died and continued to suck for the rest of the night. Fair numbers of starries and treefish were caught by those resorting to squid strips. I hate catching small rock cod so I stuck it out with the sardines for one starrie about 10 inches. Ugghh, well maybe next time.
