Yutaka and I joined Chris Backstrand on his 17 Whaler, Ahi, Saturday morning. We ran north at 630 am bypassing Mello's Bait which wasn't open anyway. We were greeted by a stiff , freezing offshore up Aliso way. The air was so cold, there was steam coming off the 57 degree water to the point it looked like a jacuzzi. Our first drift over the structure in 40-60 feet yielded several fish on the 4 and 5 inch Big Hammers. We got into a steady bite there that ended about 930 when the current died. The best colors were brown grunion, clear red, calico hunter with red flake and boiler crab. Oddly, the fish would only bite on the drift as a try the pick didn't get any bites. Yutaka brought some awesome frozen fresh dead squid but nothing would touch it--they only wanted the swimbaits on the sink (either the initial drop or redrop after 5 or so cranks). Procure sauce really helped with the bites in the cold water. Countwise, we caught and released 22 mixed calicos and sandies to 3.5 pounds (mostly sandies) and a 22" lingcod by Chris (also released). We stopped off Salt Creek on the way back and saw a bunch of folks on the anchor along the kelp edge, probably fishing the WSB. We tried a few drifts for halibut with Yutaka's killer squid for only a few short bites and what we thought was a farmed flattie. We were trailered by 12:30.
