5548, First Corbina Of The Year...Finally!!!
Posted by TBrumfield, Thu Apr-11-02 10:33 AM
Fished the high tide at Salt Creek from 10 to 11am using squid for bait since sandcrabs have been hard to find. Conditions were good...small surf, minimal kelp, and a seal and dolphins swimming in the surfline. Actually saw a corbina and spooked another (the first I have seen in a long time). I needed to find sandcrabs immediately...decided to follow the sandpiper's lead and dig for crabs. Mostly baby micro crabs...found only 5 medium sized ones after 10 minutes of digging. First cast with the crabs resulted in a 12 inch surfperch caught and released. The next cast...BAM...a solid hit with line peeling out and some fun runs (this was no perch!). It also did the typical last minute frantic lunges toward the end of the fight. It was 20 inches and about 2.5 pounds (a little skinny). I considered giving it to some fisherman walking down the beach, but decided to release it to fight again...it swam off like a bullet. If you can find those sandcrabs, the corbina won't be far behind...go get them!!!
