what're the typical techniques for catching WSB from a party boat? i've never caught one and was thinking about taking a WSB trip off of pierpoint. any info would be appreciated.

I"ll let you know what the hot set-up was as I'm going to long beach tommorow for an overnighter on Friday and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

I would try or atleast be prepared for the three basic techniques. The first set-up I would use would be a 1/2 to 3/4 oz white leadhead, depending on the current and depth, with 1 or 2 squirts pinned on. That has been pretty consistant lately and you also have a shot at a butt, also. The flatties really like the white head. If you don't get bit with that, you can go to a heavy white jig and pin it with a couple squirters. Just bounce it off the bottom. The third set-up you can try is the basic sliding sinker rig and since you probably fish for the Yellows alot, as your name would indicate, you probably know what that is. You probably know what all these set-ups are but just in case you or someone else doesn't, here you go. Oh, and try putting a red plastic bead between the slider and the hook. It'll keep the weight from slamming into your knot or rubbing it alot. The red bead also adds that shot of red to the white of the squid. Something about that dash of red when it's added. Really gets their attention. And again, use the 1/2 to 3/4 oz size depending on current and depth and attach either a 3/0 or 4/0 live bait hook. The main thing is to keep your offering near the bottom where the fish will be coming through so you'll probably want to use the 3/4 oz set-ups with the currents over there. P.S. Some people like the dropper loop set-up but I like to let my fish run before I set the hook. That's just me so I didn't make mention of it but you can give that a try also.

The trip was a total bust. I would suggest a 3/8-1/2 0z. sliding sinker with either a 5/0 circle or 4/0 "prefered" flyline hook. That's it....A total bust I was the only passanger to get up and help make bait! Pulled a hook out of one early in the morning...Got broke off on brand new maxima perfection 25lb. which won't happen again because I got one to the boat on 20 maxima no problem until the seal got it! So no more maxima perfection. I didn't see anyone on board but maybe 3 of us who had even a glimmer of what they where trying to do on the boat and while I'm no novice I do know a stick when I see them in action. Equipment can be a flash with no one home so watch what the other guys are doing ,be friendly to all and help out the poor suckers around you so they can stick a 25lb. yellowtail on the last stop. There was no iron bite,we got two legal butts one over 20 and at the end of the trip we got one 25lb. yellowtail purely by acident I assure you. I think I'd shop around long and hard before I go out of Long Beach "first time at this landing" again.If they had told me before we got to the last stop that it was for yellowtail only I'd have swapped out the 1/2 0z sinker for a splitshot or 1/8 slideing sinker. plus ya might also pick up a Tady or Sumo glow jig. They got bit best befor sunup Monday on our Tracer trip (limits). After sunup, no difference. They would eat anything with squid on it. Work the jig/leadhead SLOW and make sure yer bouncing the bottom.. This seemed to work the best.
