6078, Ever Catch Fish On A Bare Hook?

Surffished Dana Point from 9 to 10:30am today. Surf was pretty big with some kelp in the water, but it was still fishable. Used frozen sandcrabs for bait...caught/released 5 barred surfperch. Four were good sized (around 9 inches) and one dink. Saw no sign of corbina at all. One was actually caught on a bare hook (hungry fish)!?. When casting, one of my crabs flew off on my hi/lo setup, so I started reeling in and got a hookup...the other crab was still on while I beached the perch. It seems I have only been getting perch for a long time...am anxious to get something else! Has anyone else caught fish before on a bare hook?

Never on a bare hook, but I did catch a carp on a potato chip once. I also caught a clam while fishing for halibut.

I caught a carp on a cigarette butt. I was using bread on a hook and ran out. So I found a butt someone had littered and nailed about a 15 pounder on it.

A friend of my Grandpa's has 4 ponds in Arkansas on a hog farm that are all filled with stunted out bluegill. I used to get a $1/Gallon of bluegill I caught to slop the hogs with. In 1 day I made 17 dollars using 5 bare gold hooks and a bobber. That's a lot of 3-4" bluegill. I always wondered how many bass it would take to stop the stunting. The smallest pond was 2 acres and the largest was over 4.

Tight lines,
Wade

Fishing when the surf is too big? Todd, your killing me!!! J/K Sounds like you had fun with the perch. I surfed Strands Tuesday and it was going off, bassnet flaked and missed an epic session! I noticed a lot of beds on the way down to Point, the corbs have to be on the chew big time. Fell in love a few times as well, Summer must be close because the scenery is getting better each day!

Kelly, it looked like fun! Unfortunately, I'm getting over a cold, so I didn't go out which is a bummer! I shouldn't have worked out so hard in the gym last week when I felt a cold coming on!? Oh well, it looked like a peaky, fun swell anyways! I may have to try Strands for the corbs soon since there are not many on the north end of the beach!? A couple of bonehead jet-skiiers were jumping the waves and were almost on dry sand where I was fishing till the lifeguard shooed them away!
6084, I have done it twice!

First, when I was a youngster fishing the Santa Anna River (south fork) on the back side of Big Bear. The river was freshly stocked with trout. We found a honney hole and 10 anglers proceeded to land 51 legal stockers (sombody had trouble counting their limit)in under an hour. I got one to bite on a bare #14 gold trebble hook. The other time was on a wide open calico bite at the oil platform "EVA" off Bolsa Chica State Beach. I got every color in the box to work and proceeded to go through about half my stock in swimbaits. So, I started throwing a shiny new bare lead-head. I got bit about every other cast and landed a few calicos. It was just plain W-F-O. I pray for days like that now!

Tight Lines,
Terry G.

A friend of mine did when we were on the Fury last fall in a wide open sand bass bite. 6 guys on the boat, and the capt'n says now is the time to pull out all those old lures that never work. I was wacky worm rigging plastic jerk baits on a leadhead and getting hammered. The capt. and my friend were fishing bare jig heads with the same result.

Used to run trotlines in the rivers back in Texas- tie one end of the line on my side of the river and wade across to the other side. Tie off to a tree branch with the hooks slapping the top of the water and bait the hooks on the way back. If we had a good moon the channel cats would strike the flash of the bare hooks. Caught a lot of cats on bare hooks.:-)
