6601, first surf perch
Posted by , Tue Jun-25-02 11:02 AM
Went to a private beach, 3 arch cove, in laguna with my friend matt. We fished a small channel for the little orange fish with blue stripes, calicos werent biting. They had tiny mouths and small teeth, no idea what they are called. I also caught a grunion, yes a grunion, on a small fly. got bored of the rocks so decided to try the surf. Finally after so many unsuccessful attempts to locate fish i found a school, and caught a healthy 9" perch. It wasnt huge , but i was just glad to finally catch a fish from the surf. Any tips on catching corbinas, i tried to be stealthy, but every cast i made would spook em and they wouldnt go near the shrimp.

Check out the article on "Catching Corbina From The Surf" by Bill Hartman on this site...it helped me a lot! Did you see lots of Corbina at Three Arch and how was the kelp situation? Too much kelp at Salt Creek...I was considering having my neighbor call me in there, but don't want to bug them unless there is NO kelp and LOTS of corbina! Good job on the perch...if it wasn't for them I would be skunked a lot!

lot of kelp, saw two corbina in about ten minutes searching. Some spearfisherman caught 3, and some guys caught some from the shore, not sure how many.
