Whats up everyone,
Just wondering if any of you have any suggestions as to when the best time to fish in mexico is, particularly for marlin or sailfish? Also what town do you prefer if any (Cabo San Lucas, Matzatlan, Puerto Vallarta)? And last but not least if you have any info on a good charter (I know there are a lot out there that can be shady) please let me know.

Thanks a bunch!
Aces

The late summer/fall is generally the best for billfish. Jonathan Roldan is the best guy I have found putting together baja trips. Specializing in my favorite place, La Paz. We're going down in late Oct. Tell him Josh Dunlap refered you, he will answer any questions you have.

during late summer I suggest you try San Nicholas (located roughly between Mulege & Loreto) for billfish. I've caught numerous sailfish there, all well over 90 pounds, plus you have the added bonus of dorado & that stray cortez tuna!! If you need specifics, post the question, an I'll gladly give all th e info you need.

If taking the family along, look at ixtapa zihuatanejo, a few hours north of acapulco, compared to many of the other spots I fished this ranks out as one of if not the cheapest and sometimes the most consistent for sailfish, with the added bonus that there is a lot of other things to do for non fishing family members.

also while there tru casting plugs on light gear for houdfish, its a blast.

Just wondering, are you goin an a 7 day cruise? I just got back from one and I fished Cabo and Puerto Vallarta on our ports of call> Both Half day excursions. Every day is differnt and certainaly every month. I had my best experience in Puerto Vallarta, where we caught big 30 lb. Jack Crevalle on plastics and jigs.

May and September/October have traditionally been the best billfish months on the East Cape (b/w La Paz and Cabo San Lucas). Any of the resorts down there can set you up really well, but the nicest facilities are at Palmas de Cortez and Rancho Leonaro.

I would recommend going out in a super panga or deluxe super panga too, because the big cruisers just want your money, and drive you around w/o caring if you catch anything.

Another tip, tell the captain you want billfish, and hold up a $100 bill. Tell him if you catch billfish, he'll get the $100, and he'll actually work hard trying to get you some fish. Otherwise, the captains can be kind of lazy.
