71, fishing from- a BOAT?

yes that's right, i didn't have to bust out the tube today. my mom's boss needed somebody to take him and his son fishing, so hey, i was definitely up for some non float tube action. we hit camby's right off and i farmed a nice ass fish. let me tell you- i can seriously say that i hate shimano corsairs. the drag was so screwed. this was a new problem that didn't show itself until today when i hooked a sweet fish on the plastics. i went to loosen the drag and the rod would be almost half way in the water, bent to the max and the drag would be almost nothing and it wouldn't give any line. it was the weirdest thing. anyway, it was a quality fish that felt like a smaller fish making a dive when it shook it's head. i'm guessing it was a psycho monster calico or a rockfish. needless to say the hook ripped out before i could gain hardly any ground. well, with that out of the way i proceeded to teach freddie (9 yrs old) how to fish for halibut. we went over to goleta beach where i float tube, just to check things out. i caught salad and freddie got a croaker. next stop was that pipe right off the end of the goleta pier. freddie got another croaker, a shovelnose shark, and a nice bocaccio while i got my one johnny bass on the rubber. so, freddie thoroughly kicked my ass and i was supposed to be teaching him how to fish, not getting schooled. oh well, we're making a run for the islands on monday so it's all good. has anybody heard any hot spots at santa cruz or anacapa or anything? i heard the calico bite was pretty decent on the east end of santa cruz.
