I used to catch many BIG barred surf perch, as well as a fair share of halibut, grassbass, cabazone, and even the occasional corbina while throwing a strip of squid, 3-4 inches long, 1/3 inch wide tapered to a point, on a small hook, with a slider 1/2 to 1 oz and swivel two feet infront of the hook, from the pier or in the surf. Cast out as far as possible, then slowly work the strip back. Another 'secret' halibut killer was a strip of lizard fish, fished in this fashion. I caught my biggest perch, almost 4 lbs in the 80's, when the surf was 6 foot, fishing from the seawall in the whitewash. I spent 6 months living in a beach house, and used to fish from the upper deck, at almost all high tides.... in the middle of dinner, the clicker would go off, sorry mom and dad, I will be right back...... man those were fun days.....
