#14681, "Perchin Island Style 04-18-09"

I joined Capt. Larry “The Calico Hunter” Heron and friend John Yokayama for a shot at some island perchin. Left Ventura harbor in the dark and ran out to Santa Cruz.

The plan was to do some perchin and bassin. With the recent winds, the water was cold (54-58) and super clear. Could easily see bottom in 25 feet.

We fished several beaches for a slow pick on perch. We had about 15 total with the biggest going 13.25”. I had 5 with a 13.25, 12.5, 12, 11, 10. Larry and John fished Big Hammer perch grubs on the c-rig in Seawolf and smoke red. I fished the 3 Inch Big Hammer swimbait, rigged mini Hammer style on a 3/8ths, yellow head in redrum, clear red and sexy smelt. We used Pro-cure Krill and Calico Cocktail.

Here is a typical 12 inch model.

We also bounced around to some bass spots and had approx. 25 Calicos to about 3 pounds. Some fish came on 4 inch Big Hammers in redrum, clear red, sexy smelt, red calico hunter and also got some on a brand new Big Hammer color called “The Hot Carl”.

Towards the end of the day we went shallow and found some willing bass biters. I had six fish on the rip bait and with the clear water, I saw several of the strikes, including one fish that came out and missed and then came back and ate it and one fish that came from about 25 feet to eat it right at the boat.

Also saw several free swimming WSB that wanted nothing to do with us.
