#1562, "So. Calif landings overstating daily fish counts.."

Have you heard of any Landings overstating their daily fish counts. I recently went on a ¾ day boat with around 40 anglers at one of Southern California’s Landings. The boat was lucky to catch 25 fish for the day, but when I checked the web page on Monday it listed that the boat caught 135 fish. I was dumbfounded. So I called the landing and spoke to the manager and he told me that they had no reason to lie on the count. I persisted and he said he would check the boats log book and I would call him back the next day. I called him back and he told me the owner of the boat verified the numbers in the logbook and with the deck hands. I said that was not correct, because I was on the boat and I saw what was caught and cleaned. The manager told me that they are professionals and since I am not he would believe them instead of me and it was a dead issue that it wasn’t worth tying up in court. I asked who said anything about court. I called him back and told him I was totally unsatisfied with my fishing trip and wanted my money back. He told me I would have to pound sand on this one that he wouldn't’t give me my money back. He said I could send the owner a complaint letter and he would give it to him. I said good and asked for the address and he hung up on me.

Are the landings posting higher numbers to increase their business? Or are the moving numbers to cover over limits being caught? Or are they trolling with nets that their not supposed to? I don’t understand this, but I do know that they got very upset very quickly when I questioned them.

Thank you,

Fishy333

Just my observation ---

1. They are fishermen and like most fishermen we exaggerate to a degreee. They have a business to run. But the fish counts for that particular boat may be over inflated.

2. Are you sure those count were for that particular boat and date? Or was it for the week.

3. Were you satisified with the crew and captain's efforts in getting you to the fish? Did you have complaints when you came off the boat?

4. I highly doubt that they use nets. Its a major fine if they do.

5. You have freedom of choice. Go to another landing since you were treated harshly.

6. Post your question to the guys at the alcoster.com site. They are more in-tune with the saltwater bite.

Sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction..

Good fishing

Prez,

Thanks for responding. Answers to your questions.
1. Yes fisherman do exgerate, but business shouldn't when people check the fish count and decide where they want to go out of.
2. Yes. Very sure I have them for the Landing and my boat.
3. The help was helpful. On the boat I heard the same line from the Captain that I heard from other captains on bad fishing days:
A.The water temperature is only 59 degrees it dropped 5 degrees last night. The fish aren’t biting.
B.I’ve radio my friends and other captains and their not catching anything else either. (Then why do they have great fish counts also?).
C.Since nothing is biting we are going to try a new spot that we’ve never tired before.
4.They probally don't use nets, but they were sure on their numbers and I didn't see all of those fish.
5.I will defentally use my freedom of choice and use another landing.
6. I will post it there.

Thanks agian,
fishy333

The correct link to Allcoast is http://www.sport-fish-info.com

Make sure you want to get into it if you decide to post it on Allcoast. Expect lots of people boycotting the boat/landing and sending emails to the owner/landing. There's a pretty small tolerance for this kind of thing on Allcoast, so make sure it's what you think is best and isn't something that can be worked out between you and the landing. Other than that, you're on your own :-)

PS- what boat was it?
