Creek Fishing with Bella
I took my daughter Isabella fishing for her 5th birthday down at one of the many feeder creeks that flow into the American river. Nothing fancy, just a bobber and some night crawlers but it was a very successful trip. In just over an hour Isabella caught 13 fish (which she would tell to anyone who passed on the bike trail) One of the fish was the largest Red Ear Sunfish I have ever seen (no picture of that one as Bella dropped it while trying to hold it) Over all it was a fun trip, and I needed to dote o a little.

Fishing with the Twins
My 12 year old twin nephews are in from Colorado visiting my parents so I decided to take them fishing. They are not into much besides playing their guitars and texting on their cell phones, but I thought it would do them good to get them out and, perhaps, interested in fishing.

I roused them from their beds at 3:30AM (they were not happy about this) loaded up the boat and headed up to Salt Springs. We arrived at the lake just before 5:00, launched the boat, and after a short casting lesson we were fishing! Well at least I was fishing. The twins sat in the back of the boat and ate, fought, played with the fish-finder, ate some more, and slept.

I on the other hand fished. The fishing got off to a slow start with no fish coming off of the damn, which is where I always start at Salt Springs. I made a short move to back of one of the arms and with in a few cast with a Rage Tail shad I hooked up on a nice 2.5 pound Salt Spring bass. After that first bass it was non stop action for about 45 minutes, with me getting a fish or a blow-up about ever other cast.

Overall the fishing was very good. I caught between 15 and 20 fish before we left at 10:30, the twins never even made a cast. None of the fish were over 4 pounds but only one of the fish was under 2 pounds. All but two of the fish (Senko) were caught on the Rage Tail shad, which I would highly suggest. They are a great bait to try in place of a buzzbait or hornytoad type bait.

Fourth of July Topwater fun
This marks my thrid annual 4th of July Salt Springs fishing trip with my fishing partner from Modesto. We got to the lake just before safe light, dropped the trolling motor and started throwing topwaters. Third cast for my buddy with a buzzbait and a typical chunky Salt Springs bass killed it. He caught another fish on the buzz bait and I switched to the Spook. Walked it up to a clump of weeds, paused for a second, twitch BOOM fish on. Goat another fish to completely kill the spook, fought it for a few seconds and it jumped and threw the bait back at me. It makes me wonder how that is possible with all those treble hooks. We fished the rest of the morning with me getting another spook fish at about 8:00 and loose several fish on a Snag Proof Frog. My Buddy kept catching fish on a buzz bait but not as well as in years past. at about 11:00 I got the big fish of the trip, right at 4 pounds to eat my spook. We kept getting blow ups until we left at noon. I think the fishing was not as good this year because of the cooler morning temps, if we could have stayed out all day I have no doubt that the fishing would have improved in the afternoon.

If you have never been to Salt Springs before you need to go. It is a catch and release only lake that gets very little pressure. Lots of shallow weed beds, and great summer topwater action. We were the only boat on the water until about 11:00 Am and this was on the Fourth of July. They do not allow water skiing, jet skis are allowed, but they are restricted to the jet ski course in the middle of the lake. All in all we saw just three other boats and four jet skis all day.

3 day fishing trip
Got a chance for a mid week camping and fishing trip to San Antonio. We camped on the North Shore. Got up there mid morning on 6/25 and got the morning and evening bite. On Thursday and Friday we got the early morning bites while the rest of the day was set aside for relaxing and boating with a group from work.
The morning bite seemed to be the thing and we did good with top water, taking them on poppers and buzzbaits. We did good through the day with small cranks and dropshot worms and Senkos. We got mostly largemouth but caught a few smallmouth also. We stayed mostly on the north side of the lake but didn't get much in the stickups, although we got a couple of catfish on a brush hog and a senko. Working the rocky shorelines and points seemed to be the best with most fish taken really shallow.
The water level is way down and most of the coves we are used to fishing are high and dry. Harris creek is about the only way to get off the main lake besides the stickups on the north side. That whole area is only 3 to 4' and some of the shallower water comes up fast with lots of islands exposed. Cemetery Cove was unaccessable because of the sandbars. Water is stained with less than a foot of visability and some floating algae to the north, but clear by the dam and Harris Creek.
I had a great relaxing trip with a good number of fish caught and too much to drink around the campfire!

Secrets of the rubber frog
Arriving at the lake around 11am this morning I noticed instantly the change in water color. Most of the lake is now a chewy green color with 2-3 foot visibility at best. Talking to a guy at the boat ramp he said trout fishing was terrible. When the water temp gauge went in, I was intrigued to see it register 76, and later hit 78. Air temps were 85+. Summer is here.

Once again I threw the frog. For 2 hours, catching nothing. A 4lber blew up on a bluegill 20 feet in front of the boat just to taunt me. After that initial beat down I threw swimbait some. I had one good solid whack that didn't stick.

By now it's like 2pm and nothing to show. I picked up the frog again and cast it around with little confidence. Then, without warning, a completely suicidal bass came barreling through the grass with its back half out of the water to devour Mr. frog :) The fish was hot and dove straight down in to grass growing in 15' of water. After some see-sawing she went in the net. My best frog fish at 6.45lbs :)

Encouraged, I continued with the frog (Bobby's Perfect) and had good success the rest of the afternoon. The next fish was a 3.9lber that rolled on it once, then ate it on the next cast. Next, a 3.8lber that again attacked the frog with reckless abandon. After those 3 nice fish the small ones moved in and I did three 2lbers almost in a row.

The fish shut off as the sun got lower in the sky. I watched a bald eagle fly by, and had a water snake of some sort try to eat my frog at the boat. Was entertained by a blue heron that grabbed a foot long bullhead and speared it repeatedly with its bill up on shore. I was dying to fish the evening bite but had to leave. Tonight at sunset - it's gonna be slammin.

Turned tough at Margarita
Hit the lake on Friday from 10am to 3:30pm. Water is in the low 70's, with nice visibility and even more weed beds. It's not matted up frog style yet, but it's darn close.

I brought three rods today. Swimbait, frog, rattletrap. In the first 15 minutes I had a 4lber roll on the 9" Slammer but not eat it, the fish just turned at the last second and pushed the bait away. I tried the frog a ton, and finally found one that I have some confidence in after switching baits a few times. It's a bobby's perfect frog that walks the dog perfect.

All I could manage on the frog though was one weak bite from a 10 inch bass. It just felt like the bass were not shallow. I would fish a nice looking mat, then take the boat up to it and see if anything would swim out - and nothing swam out - ever.

So the next move was out in to 15-30' with swimbait, which produced one hit, but no stick. It was a weak bite as well. I found a 9lb bass floating dead on the surface. Too bad. There may be some topwater action happening early and late, but I didn't have time to stick around and find out.

Pretty tough couple hours out there. Lake needs time to settle down and get the fish in to a full summer pattern.

Red hot rockcod & Cuda Bonus
My buddy Witold and I took the 3/4 day today on the Stardust. We drove down from the central coast early AM. There were 24 passengers on the boat, with some great fishing talent on board. Winds were up on the outside so we went to the dome.

I had a little problem in that I only had 300' of braid on my reels and we were fishing in 320 to 340. Doh. Randy lent us some gear and we got to fishing. It was about as stupid as rockcod fishing can get. Drop it down, count to 3, wait for the bite. We made two drifts and put 270 rockfish in the boat!!!

The number of 2lb green stripe and green spotted rock fish was astounding. There were some starry rockfish mixed in and a handful of boccacio and vermillions. 3 nice lings also came on board, with Cliff getting the biggest one on a 6" Big Hammer with a 3oz leadhead (I have no idea how he got that bait to the bottom). Considering the length of our drifts and the number of fish that were biting it was almost unimaginable how many must have been down there.

So we were done at 11:30am and Jason said - let's go look for barracuda down south. We drove down there and there was not much sign. Shearwaters, but not in the right zone and not working right. Out of the blue Jason gets on the PA and says, "I just ran over a huge school of barracuda get ready".

He stopped the boat and Randy hooked up first cast. Sick. They didn't charge the boat but we put the anchor down and started picking. The fish were a little shy, but there were definitely good numbers in the area. I hooked 5, broke off 1 on Big Hammer, and lost 3. Doh. Landed one finally on a Tady 45. The boat did 21 fish with many more lost or missed. It was fun, I dig barracuda fishing.

One tip. Braided line fully sucks for barracuda fishing. I had none of the right gear and we were fishing with 50 and 80 braid with leaders. If I had a 15 fluoro rod for big hammer and my 900L with 40lb mono and a Tady 45 like normal I think things would have been much better in the landing department.

Anyway, awesome trip. Weather was great, fishing was great. It was a blast.

Some photos...
