#987, "March 10, 2001 - Clear Lake"

LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-01 AT 09:16 PM (PST)

Fished today with John Lake in the WON Bass team tourney. 67 boats or thereabouts. Perfect weather, sunny calm, shirtsleeves after about 10am. We ran over to rattlesnake and ripped in the morning. John got a 4+ and a 2lber pretty quick but action was slow. Around 9:30 or 10 we started flipping. I was flipping a 1/2oz brown jig with watermelon brushog trailer. John was flipping a black jig. He decides to switch to a reaper and as he's cutting his line I hookup a 5 something on the jig. He switches to the reaper anyway and proceedes to spank them going down the bank, boating another 4 something, another one 2-2, and then a fat 5-6. These fish were fat and sassy and moving up to spawn. We culled the first 2 pounder and were feeling good. We just wanted to get rid of the 2-2. Oh man did we want to get rid of that fish. Unfortunately, despite fishing super hard for the rest of the afternoon we never got the big bite we needed to really get us up there.
The bite overall was incredible. We weighed in 21.14lbs and tooke 15th place! I have never been so pissed off about catching a 20lb bag. It was the strangest feeling. We stroked them and finished out of the money. At least it was a beautiful day on Clear lake and we were catching some good fish. John taught me a thing or two about the reaper and there's nothing we did that we could look back on and wish we'd done differently.
The winners had 29lbs with an 8 something kicker. 4th place was 24lbs to give you an idea. The bite was on big time.
Here's a pic, I don't know why I'm holding the good ones, John did most of the damage today. Summer and Gina were good sports and came along with us. It was nice of the weather to cooperate.

Good job. At least it was a solid 15th. After reading the first half or so I thought for sure you'd say you placed. Oh well, next time.
