Nathan
I started fishing from my kayak within the last couple months so i'm fairly new at it too.I've been going inside morro bay because its an easy place to get started without having to battle waves .
Theres a little beach just past the power plant that i've been launching from but just about anywhere in the bay will do.As far as fishing I know there are halibut in the bay right now. They are selling live bait so you could get some anchovies or catch some smelt and drift those. I've found that the eel grass beds
in shallow water next to a sudden drop off hold the most bait fish which in turn hold halibut. You can also try what everyone else on this site uses which are rebel fastracs or swimbaits,I've been using the fastracs with no luck but by looks of them in the water I know they will work.Iwould like to add that I can't take credit for all my information i'm pretty much just relaying it from more experienced fisherman on this site that i've learned from. I hope I was able to help.
PHIL

I've been fishing for rockfish/lings and halibut from San Simeon to San Luis Bay for a while now. I was out Sun and got 22 gopher cod (all small and released) 6 bolina, a few nice sized Cabazones and three undersized lings out of Cambria. I fish the bay too. The halibut should come into the bay as soon as the sardines show up- as indicated by pelicans diving in the bay. There still should be batrays and shark in the back bay- email me at needlesa@hotmail.com if you'd like to go sometime- Andy
