...surfer. Yup, I'm sure if you surf fish then you know what I'm talkin' bout. I fished El Porto Saturday morning at dawn. I was one of the first on the beach. Dropped my bucket a little north of the rocks figuring that I should stay away from where the surfers would go. Fished for about 20 minutes then a couple of guys paddled out right in front of me. Whatevers, theres plenty of beach, but they chose to go out right in front of me. Then it happened, he caught a wave and headed straight for my line. Board went under, he went over, tangled up my line and his leash. We managed to undo it and we both went on like it never happened. I myself like to surf, but I have always showed everyone (fishers, swimmers, bodyboarders) respect for theire space. Is it me, or are surfers assuming that the beach is theires? Or are we supposed to yield to them? Don't they know that our hooks are "laser" sharp?
OK, now I feel better that I've vented, on with the report. I managed to hook some manini size perch. Maybe about 6"-8" at most. No sand crabs so I used grubs. Still waiting to hook the fatties or better yet, some Corbina's. There were a couple other people fishin' that morning, if you are reading this I'm just wondering how you did.

Kman,

I'm with you on that. I surf as well not as much as I used to but know the system. Why these Bozos choose to "localize" the beaches as if they were their own is beyond me. I always show courtesy to all of my fellow watermen regardless of what sport they are participating in.

Thats one of the reasons that I enjoy surf fishing the evening hours.

If your not going to eat it release it

Localism is what makes a beach.....every good surfer has a local beach and youve got to protect. its just the life of a surfer. My home break is Strands and if you are fishing or bodyboarding im not going to move away

I wasn't avocating anyone moving away. My point was that everyone should be able to share this beautiful recreational gift with harmony istead of some bull elephant ego macho trip that some seem to be into. As one that surfed a great deal back in the 60's and 70's I can say that this mentality has always been around. Nothing new.

Sorry Sean. But if I'm fishing a certain area first, don't think you can just move in on me like you own it. Small wars between countries are started that way, BUD!! That aint cool and it kind of upsets me that you would think that way.

We've had this basic conversation on here once or twice before. The surf zone is an area that's used by a lot of people. Surfers, fisherman, body boarders, swimmers, little kids, you name it. Sometimes there's going to be some back and forth about who's moving in on whose part of the beach. In the name of good taste, let's let this one go, and just do your part to be understanding if the other guy gets a little too close. I really don't feel like watching this thread turn into a bickering session about who encroached on who when.

Let's let it go and keep on with the fishing discussion.

Thanks

-Rob

My apologies to everyone. I'm a bit new to the sight and perhaps I should have used better judgment in my post. I'll be sure to keep all further posts on the 'POSITIVE' side. Once again, my bad.

Sean, who are you? Surfed Strands since 84, great calico bite, I will do that tomorrow, but I am curious. You surfing stairs or point? Nice pic of Josh Sleigh at my calico hot spot in the new Surfer. Nice pigdog. How long have you been a "local" at Strands? Go back to Creek if you are going to talk $hit about people who belong and don't belong at Strands. Maybe I know your face and you know mine, maybe not. Maybe we have traded barrels at White Man's. Maybe not. Maybe we can share some clean little a-frames at pipes. No worries, the corbs will be in the corner all summer, Remington will hop you while getting slotted, and we will all appreciate the eye candy on the sand. I hope you aren't one of those joeys from Aliso Viejo, I will see you at the ramp come the first 180 fatty.

If you are a local, you will know how Whiteys got it's name, just so happens a certain regular foot Cal Fishing ripper named it and it stuck. He still rips for a fat guy!

Fat guy??? Your freaking killing me net!

I think we are fortunate in So Cal. Have you heard about the wars on the East Coast with surfers & Fisherman? Try surfing Sebastian Inlet when the fishing is good...Those guys take it to another level big time!

I surf & fish Creek and Strands on a regular basis and there is plenty of room to surf & fish without causing any trouble. You have three main surfing spots at Creek, obviously these areas are where the surfers are going to congregate due to sandbars, reefs, ect....If you decide to cast out in the middle of a pack of guys you are asking for trouble, plain and simple. I have yet to see a problem ever! The Summer will bring the tourist and this when you really need to pick your spots accordingly. Early mornings and evenings are the opportune times to fish IMHO. Just use common sense and we can all enjoy the beach together.

A word of caution: The scenery down at Creek can cause a serious neck injury in the Summer.......
