Hoping for yellowtail my buddies and I chartered a boat out of Ensenada. We found cold water and windy conditions and no yellowtail. The back-up plan was to fish rockfish. We fished the north end of Todos Santos. We had 6 - 8 inch macks for bait and the lings loved them. Caught 20 lings mostly on the macks with some going for Fish Trap swimbaits. Also caught 5 red rockfish and one ling on the Jewel Glider Squid. Wind came up early and with two my buds chumming, we called it day at 12:30 p.m.

Manuel was the best skipper ever. He put us on the reef and knew rockfishing well. He baited every hook and un-hooked every fish. There was no bait net on board. It was hard to catch swimming macks bare-handed in cold bait tank water. So, Manuel dipped his arm into the cold tank and did the baiting for us.

 Bill,
I just read your message on the Ensenada trip. My father and I
have always wanted to make a trip like that to Baja. We just
bought a nice 22' walkaround wellcraft. How big do the
rockcod and lincod get down there? I bet they get pretty darn
big. well, maybe yo can give me an e-mail and let me know a
little more on how is it down there.

Larry,

Bought them from the floating bait vendor that time. I've made macks before close by the bait receiver in the past - Sabikis are good for them but I used the 2.5 inch Fin S fish on a 1/16 oz jig with better results.

I will also be there end of June. I fish Ensenada every two months.

Hey Bill thanks for the heads up! I usually take my boat down the second and last weekends in june for the calicos and for the Ensanada rodeo tourny that W.O.N. does, this year its yellow only in the tourny, but were going for it anyways, most of the yellows we have caught down there have been on large Big Hammers or the iron, but I thought a tank of small mackies might be the deal. We will be staying at the Coral the last two weekends in June this year, maybe we will see you around, just lok for my 24ft floating billboard :7 ...Larry
