#11742, "Newport Bay 3/28"

Went to Newport Bay to fish from shore with my friend Mike Nguyen. We got there about noon and started out throwing some reaction baits. It didnt take long to see that the fish werent in the mood to chase something fast due to the seemingly lack of good current flow.
We switched to texas rigging the Assalt 5" Ringer Worms with a slower presentation and proceded to whack the Spotties. We used the Smoke/Red Flake and Pumpkin. 3/16 oz bullet weights on a 2/0 Owner Offset Wide Gap with 12 lb line on 7 foot rods. We caught and released close to 20 Spotties on the Ringers, a couple of which were absolute PIGS!!! The fish were hitting the baits VERY hard today. We lost a couple big fish to the Dock pilings, as we were pitching the baits to the pilings and down the dock rows. Caught fish pitching to pilings in as shallow as 3' of water.
Hot weather, beautiful afternoon, hard hitting, and hard pulling fish. Cant ask for much more than that!!!!

John - I read your article and found it very informative. I have been meaning to try fishing the bay for sometime and hope to give it a shot this coming weekend. I am not that familiar with the bay and without giving up any secret spots, I was wondering if you could steer me to a location I can try from shore. any info will be much appreciated. Again, great article.

Hey Budman,
Bay fishing is great, easy, and close, and sometimes the fish really want to chew. Its a great way to catch some hard pulling fish on the plastics. Some access can be found on Balboa Island, it has alot of sandy beaches you can walk. I have caught alot of really good fish here.
Thanks for the interest in the article. Those Assalt baits are really hard to beat. The Spotties really hit those things with a vengeance. Employ the techniques mentioned in the article and you will catch fish. Good luck and let me know how you do down there.

John - Thanks for the info. Who has the best assortment of the Assalt worms? I will be sure to post after my trip. Thanks again.

Hi Budman,
Well I do not know where you live, but this is what I suggest. Go to the WWW.Assalt.com website and check out the dealer listing. This will show all of dealers in your location. Give them a call and see if they have the 5" Ringers and 6" Salt Shakers.
If you are in the Orange county area, give Eric a call at the Longfin. He told me that he has the baits baits mentioned in the article on order. Ask Eric if he has them yet!!!!
Hope this helps!
