My dad and I launched at six today and fished the Malaga Cove kelp. I was using a weedless rigged 4 inch motor oil/chartreuse grub and my dad was fishing a white 4 inch grub with squid. I was nailing sandbass and calicos while my dad was getting skunked. Once I almost caught two at a time when a calico followed his friend all the way to the yak and literally almost jumped in. I also had a calico hit my plastic it was sitting by my legs. You had to be ready to set the hook anytime because they bit everywhere, but they only seemed to hit that color. Out of all the bass I caught, I only boated one legal. My dad moved out deep and I moved in shallow because the bass were so thick I thought I would get one on the fastrac. No such luck, but I did have a short seabass follow my lure in about 15 feet of water. It may have bitten but I am not trained well enough to know. My dad came back and caught a legal bass and a cabezon so neither of us got skunked. A very productive day and it feels like the water is warming, spring is here.

nice report. when you have followers, try to hold the fish down aways from the boat and have a friend quickly drop over a lure. the followers will bite it no prob.

I was using 12 lb. test in green tint. For those shorties its ok but the one calico I got that was legal almost got me in the kelp. Malaga Cove is located in Palos Verdes California. If you are in a kayak or tube you can launch from 300 paseo drive (use mapquest to find it) The zip code is 90274. If you are in a boat, it is located in the southernmost tip of Santa Monica Bay, by Torrance Beach. It is pretty weird, the last time I went I only caught a sculpin and a Sand bass. I think its because I was using swimbaits in the thick kelp and I couldnt get close to the bottom without getting hung up. With the weedless grubs you can fish thick kelp and rocks without getting snagged.

I use freshwater worms and grubs when Im fishing them weedless. The shad style swimbaits are too thick. The old WHAM lures and Mogambo Grubs would work fine, maybe Ill even try a crawfish or a moptop next time. Well, basically you tye a hook just below a worm weight(like a sliding egg sinker but cone shaped) so it looks like a regular jighead. Then you slide the hook through the body of the worm and then back out past the 3rd or 4th thread, unless its a long worm, then you could probly pull it through on the 7th or eighth thread and then you just stick the point of the hook back in so no weeds can snag on it.
