#5671, "Salt Creek Report"

Fished the high tide today for just over an hour. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any sandcrabs (only a few micro-crabs). I used shrimp for bait (a first). Conditions were decent...small surf, but some wind and kelp. Caught/released nine surfperch (some large and some dinks). Saw no sign of any corbina at all. The kelp really started moving in at peak high tide. I conclude that shrimp is much better bait than squid for the perch...I would get nibbles or a fish on almost every cast! All the perch looked like they were spawned out.

Brumfield,

Are you talking about Shrimp or Ghost Shrimp? I feel your pain regarding the scarcity of Corbies and Crabs. Water Temp today was 60. When it reaches about 65 I think we will be in business. :)

What is the difference between the two? A fisherman on the beach gave me some...they were about an inch and a half long (I think they were ghost shrimp?)...worked great on the perch! Will they work on corbina too? That would be nice...once water temps increase some...look out!

GHOST SHRIMP IS A BIT SMALLER THAN THE SHRIMP. PLUS THEY LOOK WAY DIFFERENT THAN STORE BOUGHT SHRIMP. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL. WERE THEY ALIVE??? GHOST SHRIMP IS USUALLY SOLD LIVE. IF NOT, THEY WERE PROBABLY REGULAR SHRIMP. BTW, I USE SHRIMP ALL THE TIME, BUT TO LET YA KNOW I TEND TO ALWAYS LEAN ON SMALLER FISH WITH IT. THE BIGGER FISH I GUESS JUST EITHER DON'T FALL FOR IT, OR IT'S USUALLY CROWDED BY SMALLER FISH THAT IT GETS BIT OFF BY THE TIME THE MONSTERS COME. ALSO, BAIT FISH, AND BABY FISH LOVE SHRIMP, SO YOU'LL LOSE IT EVERY CAST UNLESS ONE SNAGS ON. GREAT BAIT THOUGH.

The last time I used ghost shrimp they had claws/pinchers similar to a crawdad and a biatch to keep on your hook if you tried casting them?

It's all about the sand crabs Todd!!!!!

The price is right too...

Grab your board, backpack and an old stick with a few Fish Traps or Hammers and hit the kelp bro. The cali's are chewing NOW!!!

The sand crabs will be in soon enough....
