#6444, "Bassing report 6/15"

Yutaka and I fished his club's event, The POETS 2002 Bass Tournament, saturday. We had a shotgun start from the Newport Harbor entrance at 7am which promptly left my 15 Gregor with a 15 horse in the fading wakes of those with real boats. My prefishing wed. told us not to go north as the bite had cooled up HB way, so we opted for CDM through Laguna. Yutaka put two nice calicos in the tank right away while I managed to not get bit for a couple hours. Finally I was able to contribute and we alternated adding to the stringer. The bite was tough with only one or two fish coming off each spot. The pattern of the day was that there was no pattern--fish came from as shallow as 5 feet out to 45 feet. The 66-68 degree water was nicely off-colored and that made up for the bright sun which came out early. We only caught 15 or 16 fish total but that gave us 18.10 pounds for a 1st place team win and also 1st and 2nd place individual's single big bass, a 5.4-pound sandy by me and a 4.1-pound calico by Yutaka--good for $490 between us--woohoo! All fish caught were on 5-inch Big Hammers with 3/4 and 1 oz Fishco leadheads. Pro Cure Calico Cocktail really helped with the tough bite.

Duck sauce from Charlie 's peking duck in Monterey Park. Smeared generously over your plastic and fished very slowly while squinting real hard ( caucasian only ).

Way to go Fongster! We tried diving Reef Point off of Crystal Cove in Laguna yesterday and it was so murky I wished I would have had a rod and the kayak with me. I can't wait to fish that place.

As always Fongster, you're the man. Just like the old days reading your posts at fishinghotpage, still whacking 'em on your little Gregor. Right on and congrats.

Gee, thanks guys. I am humbled by your comments--there are a lot of folks who fish better than I or Yutaka. I prayed for a victory that day and God delivered. The little tin boat however is in need of repair as it's leaking again. Don't worry, I'd never sell it to any of you when I replace it, lol!

Fongster,

If you find a good method for patching your aluminum, please send me an email. I'm bailing about 10 gallons out per trip on mine and it's getting old. My boat has too much good luck built in to buy a new one so I need to fix her up.
