#24658, "Stockton Deepwater Channel - 29Nov04/30Nov04"

Went on a couple o' get-up-at-the-crack of-lunch-and-go-fish'n trips the last two afternoons and had a pretty great time. Started at Ladd's and fished til dark both days. The tides weren't the best for the hours I was on the water but the fish were still cooperative (though you had to work for 'em).

On both days I started out at the eastern rock wall at the entrance of the no wake zone (aka "the meatwall") and vertical jigged a bunch of smaller fish using a shad pattern Duh! spoon. Couldn't get anything of decent size so I went to main spot #2, the area where the old steamship is docked. There's a ton of bait there and it was impossible to NOT impale a shad on your retrieve. In hindsight I shoulda saved the all the shad in my livewell for flylining 'em during the slower times. Picked up a bunch of stripes (and three incidental largemouth to 16") throwing the Pointer DD, Team Daiwa Vibration, Super Spook and white bucktail jigs. Pick yr favorite lure--they's all working. They were only schoolies up to 20" but they fought nicely on the lighter gear I was using ('cept for my Super Spook rig, which had 20 lb line). I did have one monster blow up on the Spook though--felt its weight ever so briefly and wasn't able to hook it. Dang-o. Oh yea, there are a couple of old sailing ships working up and down the channel--a pretty nifty sight. Didn't see them flying a Jolly Roger nor did I receive any shots fired across the bow so I wasn't too worried about being boarded and walking the plank. Yarghh.

Hey steve, sounds like you had a couple fun afternoons.:-) Have you tried spooning for the stripers?I have been on a pretty consistant bite in the so delta (except for last saturday) throwing rattle traps but getting most of my fish with the silver buddy.:o On thanksgiving day I had About 20 linesiders from 5 to 10 lbs on the buddy.I would find a break with current and either worm it back to the boat or vertialy jig it in water from 8 to 14' deep.I even had a couple good fish in victoria.

Wow, a bunch o' 5 to 10 pounders...that must've been a great outing. I haven't had the chance to stick any that big this year--hopefully, I'll luck into some larger ones before the water temp gets too low for lure fish'n.

Yes, I did spoon some fish up (the Duh! spoon) but I have yet to catch any on the Silver Buddy. I bought a few when you first started singing its praises but I just haven't tied 'em on. Next time I go out I'll have a Silver Buddy rig with me, and I'll let you know the results. So do you like the large (3/4 oz) or small sized lure?

I almost always use the 1/2oz in silver but do use the 3/4oz in deeper water or if the current is realy moving the bait to far/fast.I do like to use the current to my advantage and sometimes just let it drift on a slack line until it reaches the bottom. Most of te time I control the lure on a semislack line and follow the bait down with the rod tip.It is thye same if you are worming a spoon back to the boat. The fish I am on are at the back of coney island and by quin?island. Its a real cool spot but I think the stripers are all over the place in the south delta. They will hit rattle traps too and also the swimbaits(white 4-5.5" sassyshad type of things).
Who knows maybe I'll see ya on the water some time:-)

Catching fish on Silver Buddies is just another of those urban legends and should be ignored. Fish simply won't hit it. After all, why would they try to eat a flat piece of metal with lead on one end?

Bro, you should check your facts on www.urbanlegend.org before making silly posts about catching fish on Silver Buddies!

Buzzfish

P.S. You ARE the Silver Buddy Master! Kind of makes me feel ill but no arguing with success.

Sorry Bro,

Couldn't resist. It kills me the way you tear up the bass withthose things! Like the day at "that lake": I saw you catch what, 20 fish? All in the same place? And when I finally broke down and tried one I caught a few as well.

Thanks for the tips and info, Swampus. I've never fished the Coney area so it looks like I'll have to start exploring the southern reaches more...

You're right--it's a totally ghetto lure!

#24764, "Salisbury Island?"

Swamp --

I'm wondering if one of the islands you're referring to is Salisbury Island? It's near the bridge that comes over from Cal Pack Rd. (which is inaccessible from the road, unfortunately -- would be good for kickin' in!). Cooch took me in there, too, when I went out with him on a guide trip.

There are (were?) a number of shacks/homes along the little inlet, with docks & stuff; my buddy built a place there, but everyone's being forced to move out & tear down their structures. Too bad, it was a nice spread. I spent a 4th of July there a few years back, where the neighbors all got together for a big feast, fireworks, etc.

Oh, well, that's *progress*, I guess ;(
