Went to Berryessa this morning in search of the ol' brown fish. I took off to my normal milk run of smallie spots, and the day was going pretty slow. I told my buddy that we should go explore some stuff I don't normally hit so off we went. We started to catch a few on cranks but as soon as the sun broke out, that bite died. We switched to plastics and began to get bit again. I got a little tick on my drop shot and set into a pretty good fish. That pretty good fish became a REALLY good fish as soon as it felt some pressure. After a while it gave up and came to see me in the boat. It was the biggest smallie I ever got and he ended up going 5.1 on my scale. We ended up running more south and finished out the day fishing around places I hadn't fished before. We would have had about a 15 pound bag with that big brown fish in the bag.
January has been the best fishing month I've ever had. I got my best ever largemouth earlier this month at 10.57, and today I stuck my personal best smallie. I wish every month could be January.

WOW! What a huge smallie and that makes two smallies I've now heard of going over 5 lbs during this January. I think a few of us could have used that pig during the A/C tournie...
You're a fishing fool lately! Great job and keep it coming.

You know what Daren? The more I look at that fish, the more I think you're right. It does look a lot like one of those mules. I saw the picture of that 5.90 smallie from a couple weeks ago, and it is a lot different looking. Either way, I'll take it.
