Original plans were to go fish the Castaic lower lake to throw the big baits for a toad, but they weren't letting boats on because of the Love ride. So we turned around and went to Piru. Started out throwing swimbaits because of all the reports of big fish being taken on the big baits, but no bites or followers. So after an hour or so of that we switched over to spooning after I noticed all of fish metered around 40-60ft. Right away my buddy Loppy " No Fish" caught a small dink on the spoon. A little while later I caught one in 66ft of water on the spoon and that was it for the spoon bite for the rest of the day. Went down to one of my usual winter spots that I know and caught one shaking a salt and pepper worm in 35ft of water. That was pretty much it for the day. Lake is really low, hopefully we will get some more rain this year.
Yeah,Piru is pretty tough right now.The last time I was there (last week)I trolled needlefish with leadcore by the dam,for nothing not even a bite. Then I went for bass fishing the east side of the lake with crankbaits, plastic worms and nightcrawlers for 1 small bass.
It's been a few months since the last time I was up at Piru but this lake is usually a very easy winter type lake. I think the storm that just pasted through shut the bite down and sent the fish deep. every year I go there and catch a lot of fish in 30-40 ft shaking worms and jigs. I did meter a lot of fish and some very big fish but they just wouldn't hit. If the weather stays good for a for awhile then the fishing should get better.
