#10518, "half-day with dana wharf sportfishing 8/8"
Went out for a half day of fishing on "Sum Fun" with Dana Wharf Sportfishing out of dana harbor. left at 10 o'clock and headed north to our first fishing site. Couldn't tell where we were though...fog pestered us until noontime. Used live anchovies with a rubbercore sinker. Hooked up with a mackerel. The boat continued north to another site, on top of a kelp bed. My cousin landed a cabezon and a sculpin, for me the menu was still mackerel. A few assorted bass were caught on the other side of the boat but the fish were reluctant to bite. Finally on the last site the fog cleared and the glorious sun shone out on our final position: a nearshore kelp bed a mile or so north of dana point. Finally the bass couldn't resist our anchovies...or we just found a school. Calico and sand bass were being landed left and right. My cousin caught a would-be jackpot winner: a 2lb calico bass. Bummer he didn't enter the jackpot. I caught about a dozen nice-sized sand bass and kept a few for dinner... the crew was professional, friendly and helpful. Tipped 'em in thanks... gotta get back out there before the bite cools down!
