Man there isn't much to say here. I only caught 3 keepers, 1 largemouth for 3.3lbs and 2 smallies just over a pound each. I thought I was hurting all day until the weigh in started. I hadn't heard of many people catching fish . Someone told me the most they heard was 3 fish so that kind of put a smile on my face.
Well I started throwing a rapala crankbait up close to a steep wall all the way out at the end of Capel, I had caught a couple of 5" maybe 6" fish. Along the way down that wall I flipped a wacky senko into every piece of timber sticking out. I missed a couple bites and didn't catch any. After that I moved out of Capel down towards the right making my way to largemouth water. I stopped at a couple spots on the way where I would normally catch fish and didn't. I moved out of my last area where I would normally catch fish sue to a boat that was prefishing and casting literally maybe 5 yards from where I was. I had asked the boat if I could move around him and he said ya. He then moved with me again casting next to me. REALLY, This guy really wants to fish thus water I guess, so I again let him know that I was going to move and told him I would go a little ways down to male a few casts before moving to the other side of lake. WHAT A PAIN IN THE NECK HE WAS. He was only prefishing.
So I went to the other side of the lake and caught my largemouth and one smallie in 3 casts. Here comes the dude in the boat. Now I'm annoyed. He didn't quite make it to me before turning around and going back to where I first ran into him. He then proceeded to fish either with or right next to Steve. That pissed me off for some stupid reason. I missed another bite or two and moved down a bit to let that spot sit for a few. I say Andy hit the spot and so I waited a little longer and then came Steve. I watched him tale a couple casts and I rowed over to see if I could fish there as well. He said ya so I started throwing. Both Andy and Steve had not got a bite there that I knew of so I knew that it was a certain cast and spot that they needed to hit. I got my 3rd a few casts later.
I was taking long casts and working the worm in real slow. I moved again to where a point came out and then it dropped to 20' plus. I was fishing and started noticing a few scattered fish on my graph, and then more and then within a few minutes my screen filled up. I was in 26' water and fish were all over a bait ball in 8'-16' I quickly reeled up about half way and got nailed. I broke off on the Hillary. Seemed to be a good bite and fish. Steve and I Sat there catching a fish every cast for about 10 min but no keepers. I had missed one other what felt like keeper fish in this feeding frenzy. Every other fish brought up were spitting out shad. This was cool and the highlight of my day until weigh in. I know there were plenty of keepers in this school of spots, but the little ones were getting to the hairs first. They hit anything we dropped in there.
I didn't expect the lake to fish this way last weekend. Like I said it was real tough. I was very surprised to get the win. I thought I missed way to many fish and my opportunity to catch any more keepers when that school of spots came through. Those were the only spots I caught all day. The spots were just not eating. Maybe not cold enough yet.
Thanks to all that showed up and I wanted to say thanks to all that brought a bait and canned item. The Sonoma guys all brought both as well as Wayne and Robert Middleton. Thank you guys
