First of all let me say, that me say that I’m not claiming to be an outboard expert. This is what I do, and it works. I’m sure some of you already know this stuff, I’m also sure some of you don’t. This is a quick and easy way to maximize your motor’s performance and make sure it’s in tip top working order.

Motor off, in neutral, with engine cover removed.

CHANGING GEAR LUBE: This is the drain plug hole.

This is the vent(upper) and fill level hole(lower)

With oil drain pan in place under motor, open all 3 holes. Let lube drain completely, it takes several minutes. Once drained you’ll need to refill it. You’ll need marine gear lube. Do yourself a favor and buy the pump. It’s the only way to go. Attach the pump to the drain hole and fill from the bottom until oil drips out of the level hole. Now it’s full. Re-attach the 2 top plugs then remove pump and put the plug back into the bottom hole. Your gear box oil change is finished.

LIQUID TUNE UP:
Now where gonna clean the carbs. Buy a spray can of marine choke and carb cleaner. I recommend Quick silver or the can with the mountain scene on the label. The can your gonna see in my hand didn’t have the foaming action that I like. It did get the job done though. Remove air filter box and round plastic cover on top of engine(if yours has one)

Your engine should now look like this

Now remove the plugs

Take the carb cleaner can(aka liquid tune-up or LTU) and spray a generous amount into the plugs holes. Let this sit and soak for 10-15 minutes. Manually rotate pistons(engine) so that the the one that was up is now down. You can see the piston position in the plug holes. Spary them again and let soak again for another 10-15 minutes. Now put the same plugs(not new ones) back in. Always be careful when installing plugs, watch for cross-threading and don’t over tighten.

Start your motor. It may be a little difficult depending on the severity of your carbon build up. Run you motor at a very high rpm. This is extremely loud and very smoky. Your neighbors will hate it. Do what I do and keep reminding yourself that their cats poop in my yard everyday. This is payback. Once your motor is screaming at nearly full throttle(about 2/3 for mine) spray LTU directly into carb throats. Your motor will try to die, try to keep it running. Rotate each carb in small sessions. Run the entire can of LTU(carb cleaner) through your engine.Once the can is empty and the smoke clears a little, run your motor at a more civilized rpm and let it run for a while, at least 15 minutes.

Take out the existing plugs and replace them with new ones. Put air box(and round cover if you have one) back in place. Mist the entire motor(inside of engine cover) with WD40, this will help fight corrosion.

Replace engine cover. Your tune-up is done.

GREASING: If you have a boat, you’d better have one of these.

Make sure you buy marine grease.

These are grease intake valves. Most people call them zircs(spelling?)
http://momentoffame.com/photopost/data/501/medium/100_0197.jpg

Clean all visible grease from your motor, then pump all the zircs full of fresh new grease.

If necessary top off your auto trim hydraulic. The white circle at the bottom is the fill hole. Tilt your boat as far forward as possible and raise your motor as high as it will go. Remove cap and add fluid. Mine uses auto transmission fluid for cars. It only allows you to add a tiny bit. Replace cap.

Your tune and lube is complete. Repeat every 6 months or 50 trips. Now go catch a fish!!

Here’s another little thing I do. Take off your tires. Take some of the old grease under your dirt skirt and smear it on your lug post. You’ll never have rusted post. Also of course pump your axle bearing full of fresh grease too.
