Stayed with my Cuz who just moved down there. The house is about 1 mile from the Bayhill and Windermere golf courses. My take on it is that the whole city is kind of swampish, so there's ponds and lakes everywhere. He said he had a "lake" in his backyard - I figured it'd be a pond so I brought a telescoping bluegill rod just to mess around. Turned out to be about 4-5 acre pond. "There isn't S$%& in this lake," I told him. So Cuz grabs a spare rod spinnerbait and proceeds to catch a largemouth off a shallow point on a white spinnerbait. I toss out a roadrunner and land one too. Small enough not to get a picture, big enough to initiate a more probative outing the next day. That night I made a trip to Bass Pro Shops to pick up some hardware. They had a sale on Storm hardbaits so I picked up 2 chug bugs, wigglewarts, and some thundersticks. That store has an incredible aquarium! http://www.calfishing.com/dcforum/User_files/3cb37c391dc25f1b.jpg
Got up early Wednesday and tossed out the popper. First time fishing a topwater bait but it was fairly easy to use. Picked up one in a shallow cove, had to horse it through some grass. http://www.calfishing.com/dcforum/User_files/3cb37c6d233ab805.jpg
Missed other hits, most of which came when the popper was sitting still. The weather was pretty foul throughout the week, with a front moving through and chilly evenings.
By Friday, sun broke and finally got to bust shorts and Tshirts. Fished from 3-7Pm that day. It was a really special afternoon, fishing with my niece & cousin. Bull bluegill were hitting cranks and small jigs, providing much excitement for the little one http://www.calfishing.com/dcforum/User_files/3cb37ca3241ae328.jpg
and Cuz picked up a nice really nice one on a bobber and marabou jig of all things. He's not much of a fisherman but it was definitely a task getting that sucker in on 4 pound test! Must have jumped 4 times! http://www.calfishing.com/dcforum/User_files/3cb37cce24a5a1c1.jpg
Anyway, It sure was a great trip, and thanks to all who posted replies to prior inquiries regarding Orlando. I can totally see how Bill Dance et al catch so many fish per outing. The myriad lakes down there just don't get that much pressure. There are just so many more bodies of water to fish. I saw a guy fishing a canal alongside the highway on my way to the airport. Probably busting some lunkers, too . . .
