#4545, "Eastern Sierra's Report"

June 22-23
Owens River - fished the general regs section below bentons crossing bridge for a real easy pick on planters. Got 10 within an hour, on worms and trout teasers. Lost several others, all cookie cutter planters. Lost a couple of smaller native types, but all in all a good start.

Convict -
Took the canoe out for an easy paddle on saturday, trolled thomas bouyants around the lake for 3 hookups. Got 3 more fishing near the river. There were a good deal of fish, however shore anglers were not fairing that well. The eastern end of the lake, by the parking looked dead. The water is very clear, and we saw only 2 trout swimming over that end, most of the action from boat or shore was in the south west corner by the inlets.

San Joaquin -
Very easy fishing, we stayed at soda springs campground I think (second one) and had no problem gettin some stockers for dinner. The river was a little on the high side, but still good fishing. Moving away from the main pool, yieled many more wild fish. Not many larger wild fish, but a good mix of browns and brookies, with only one small golden hybrid.

Crowley-
Fished the 6 bays area (sandy point) for about 1.5 hours before the wind came up. Fish were much deeper than i am used to in crowley about 25-30 feet. Only folks doing anything was with inflated crawlers. We got one nice trout, but that was it. Saw several others doing well, but would say crowley is slow a the moment. Algea was starting to get pretty thick. I would wait a few weeks, especially fly fisherman as there is a Daphnia?? hatch that most of the trout are keying in on right now, and as i understand, they are hard to imitate.

Camped friday night at Owens river campground, right below benton's crossing bridge, Used to really enjoy staying here, but $18 a car for camping is just stupid ($36), looks like friday nights will be in the BLM land from now on. This is a great place for the family - flush toilets, showers, store and stockers, but when looking for a place to crash - forget it.

Camping at devils postpile was nice, however there is now a $5 per person charge to get in. Still worth it. Mosquitos were pretty healthy too, dont forget your repellant.
