Subject: Castaic, Placerita Park Closures; Vasquez staffing cutback
The County of Los Angeles handed out notices last Tuesday that all park programs--school tours, public guided tours, moonlight hikes and astronomy programs were being cancelled immediately. A friend of mine who works at Vasquez was given notice on Wednesday that yesterday was her last day working in the park that the county was closing Castaic and Placerita while Vasquez would have only two remaining staffers and no public programs. She has worked in the park for several years.
We are having a meeting this Thursday, March 27, 2003 at 4:00 p.m. at the Placerita Nature Center for anyone interested in stopping this process. People from a number of different groups ranging from Mountain Conservancy representatives, county, and city of Santa Clarita have all been invited. The township council from Acton/Agua Dulce has also been invited to participate. Please consider attending and passing this invitation along to anyone else within your community that would be interested and effective in helping us keep these parks open. Not only are we going to lose access to our parks, but the process of rebuilding institutional knowledge that comes only with experience through working in the parks is a great loss to all of our communities. I am hopeful that this coalition of community groups may be able to stop the County of Los Angeles.
