#1754, "Lake Lopez Sept 1-2"

I headed out to Lopez on Saturday morning after picking up a Ranger 518 DVX from my pal Dan Frazier. We got on the water around 9am and headed back to Whittenburg. We struggled on Saturday to get the bites. We had a few in Whittenburg, and then Dan had to go. I went into Pozo and caught some small blade fish. Just nice to get out of the wind!! I went back out to Whittenburg to finish the day. I lost a good one on the big Fat Free Shad, I got tore off in the trees. I managed a small fish on a speed trap on top of the ledge with all the sticks.

Sunday was a different story. We really whacked em. Dan and I got on the water early, and headed for the mouth of Whittenburg. I nailed a nice 3.5lber on the dropshot immediately. A big reaper on the dropshot? What the heck. We metered around and got bit everytime we got over some good marks. Caught a handful of dinks and proceeded back to the sticks in Whittenburg. Dan managed to shake a 2lber out of the middle of the channel. He broke off a giant on a jig not too long after in the trees--freight trained! I got on the break of the channel and pitched my jig around some submerged wood. Stuck a nice 4.5lber on the jig in the base of the tree. Thank goodness for the 20lb line I was pitching with!

Dan and I took a ride back to the Lopez arm and did some graphing. We metered some good marks in about 22 to 40 feet of water. Lopez sure has a lot of deep activity...bait, perch..shoots, that screen gets lit up! Anyway, we pulled off a point about halfway back, and proceed to load the boat with 3 to 3.5 lbers on the drop shot. I nose hooked 4" worms and Dan stuck with a texas rigged d-shot setup. We both got slammed.

We moved to some nearby point, and caught two more quality fish. Everytime we got bit, we saw activity on the meter...

Fun day at Lopez and had a nice Beer-B-Q in Nipomo that evening.
