The small guys are surely muskrats, but the big one sure wasn't. Beavers get that big but if it didn't have the flat tail the only other thing I know of are nutrias. I don't know if they occur around here but they are an exotic species from Asia and are a plauge in Oregon and other locales. Sounds like you might want to take a baseball bat or some other protection if they are coming after you!
