#81, "September 25, 1999 Cachuma Lake"

Today my good buddy Matt hooked me up with a trip to Cachuma with him and pro Dan Frazier to fish in Dan's boat. We bugged out of San Luis at 5:30am and were on the water around 7. We fished all day until 4:30 and although the bite was tough each of us caught a couple of nice fish. We started out in deep (45-50 foot deep) water fishing worms. The fish were here and there on the meter but not biting so after an hour or so of working this area we made a move to fish some more deep water areas which weren't biting either. The water is VERY clear here, we could see bottom at 20-25 feet. Making another move out to the edge of the big flats area past the marina I hooked up our first fish on a yamamoto spider grub on a 1oz head. The fish was only about 14" long but it's belly was absolutely bulging. Didn't fight a bit I just cranked it up. We hit a few areas here and Dan boated two dinks split shotting on a good meter mark. We had a few short worm bites before buzzing up the lake around the island to throw some fake trout baits. Dan was fishing a flexbait which is a really hard to find trout bait made a few years ago and connected with a nice fish a little under three pounds. This got us pretty stoked and it seemed like we might get on this bite but it didn't happen after that first fish. We kept at it for a while and then went back down the lake. We fished a small cove past Cachuma bay and saw some nice fish in the shallows but they just didn't want to bite. Gin clear water and bright sun made them pretty picky. After chasing around these shallow fish for a while we made a move towards the dam to fish some more deep ledges. Like the earlier spots, the fish were there but didn't want to bite, so we pulled in on the bank and worked down another cove throwing cranks and jerkbaits but no luck there either.
Since it was about 3pm by now and we were kinda out of ideas we went back to our first spot and Matt proceeded to smack the daylights out of two nice 2 pound type smallmouth on his brown proline jig in deep water. We worked the area a while longer and I hooked up on the yamamoto spider grub again for a 2 and a half pound largemouth, our last fish of the day.
Today we fished a some different techniques and types of water than I normally fish, say at Margarita, and it was interesting and a good learning experience. Made me wish I had some good electronics on my boat for one thing. Big thanks to Dan for taking us out in his kick ass Ranger and putting us one some fish at Cachuma. We'll be rooting for him at the Western Classic!
