#85, "September 30, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Is it almost October already? The weather seems to think that August is finally here. Well I went for the afternoon run at the lake on Thursday and fished from 1 to around 5. Went to the narrows first off to check out an area where Matt and I caught some fish a month ago. It's in the narrows about half way back and there are these submerged stickups out in the middle. Before I could even get the trolling motor in the water I see fish breaking by one of the bouys. I cast over there but got nothing. The fishing was tough for the next hour and I had no bites. Then I'm drifting in the wind out in the channel and my fish finder goes black, I'm thinking huh, this thing is messed up when I get ripped at the boat and farm a nice fish. Then I see that a huge ball of shad just came under the boat. Next cast I farmed another one and then I lost track of the school in the muddy water. Oh well, so after about 2 hours I had no fish in the boat so I went back down to the area just to the narrows side of salsipuedes bay. Finally I stuck one on the green sardine 5" fish trap swimbait that bit like a piece of moss but was a respectable 2 and half pounder. Worked this area for a while and moved back down towards the marina. At the white oak ramp I pulled in to fish the bay but it was really shallow throughout. Moving off the bank about 200 feet I found the outer weedline and proceeded to stick 4 quick fish betweee 2 and 2.5 pounds all on the swimbait. They were biting agressively and they weren't missing which was nice. After this flurry it totally died and I didn't catch a thing the rest of the night.
