Got dropped off at the Santa Cruz Pier yesterday to do some evening fishing. All I had were some grubs and egg sinkers in my pocket. Casted out few times with nothing to show. It was cold and windy. I moved down towards the entrance where there was some surf and caught what looked like a very small bullhead (2").
Decided to go down to the beach on the lighthouse side and it looked good, but there was a lot of kelp. Tried tossing in between the kelp with no luck. Casted as far as I could and let it fall. As soon as I would start reeling "bump, bump....bump bump" started getting bites. Well kept casting behind the kelp and ended up hooking about 7-8 perch only landing 2 and losing what felt what would have been a personal best perch or a rockcod. I was frustrated because as soon as I hooked one out there and started trying to get it throught the salad, they'd come off, becuase I'd pick up some seaweed and I would end up losing the fish. Both fish I landed where found buried under some think seaweed on my hook. Not my kind of fishing but I was getting PLENTY of bites. I fished form 6:30-7:45 pm before I got picked up.
Tackle: 2 oz egg sinkers: 1.5" motor oil/gld flake grubs: 15" leader Tips: Cast behind the kelp.
