Just a few things to add to Outrages recommendations.
1) You might try a sink tip added to a floating line instead of a full sinking line. This may be the ticket for boilers, especially if coupled with the longest leader you can get to roll over comfortably.
2) Try the Sar-Mul-Mac pattern tied in 3.5-5" sizes with verying degrees of belly and back materials. This pattern can be adjusted to match most of the major baitfish in California.
3) Experiment and post back to let us know what helped.
4) Most important- HAVE FUN!
