#4979, "Report on Bolsa chica 2/28"

Well guys and gals, I went out to do some Perching like I said I would. I just didn't end up in Newport like I thought. Last minute decisions thrust me straight down the 605 (from Arcadia ) and into Norm's Bigfish on PCH. Picked up a few more supplies and asked the big guy where they were hitting. He pointed me in the direction of the first parking area just over the bridge on PCH off Anderson St., which leads to the beach right directly behind the Harbor House Cafe. The surf was absolutely horrific. 5 to 6 ft atleast and crashing hard. There were a few guys fishing the bait with the long rods so I decided to give it a shot. I tried it for about 2 hrs with the grubs and did land three 8-10 in. Barred fatties and got numerous hits. All on the 2 in. Motor Oil w/ red flake coated w/ the Pro Cure Calico Cocktail. But I got my butt kicked royaly by that powerful surf, BIGTIME! Soaked my AZZ thoroughly from head to toe. So I decided to try the back bay by the Simple Green building and Shell fuel dock just south of the PCH bridge. I went back to Norm's to pick up some chovies and mussels ( on the advice of the big guy ) and headed back. Set up with whole chovies, using my Ambassader 5500 spooled w/ 12 lb which is attached to my 6 1/2 ft seeker, using a 3/4 oz. barrel and 2 ft of 8 lb leader on a 1/0 octapus hook. The mussels were pinned on to my surf set-up that consisted of my Shakespeare Millenium spooled with 6 lb and set on a 6 ft Browning trout special. I used a 1/2 oz barrel w/ 2 ft of 4 lb leader and the #6 octapus hooks I was pinning my grubs on. In a period of about 5 hrs, fishing an outgoing tide no less, I managed 2 short butts, 2 keeper spotties of about 13-14 in., and 5 short spotties. Not bad for an outgoing tide, huh? It was a ripper, too. The butts and 3 of the 7 bass, including the keepers, were hooked slow dragging the chovies back. The mussels accounted for the other 4 bass along with a number of mystery strikes, one which I set the hook on and had mean drag sounding for about 5 seconds before the hook pulled:-(. Probably a spotty but we'll never know. So what began as a dissappointing day ( not being able to put in a full day of perching ) actually turned into descent outing. Atleast I was able to feel some drag sound and the pull of some very tough fish. Isn't that what it's all about. Talk to you all later.

P.S. Sometime next week, hopefully, I'll try it again when the surf is down a little but more than likely I'll give the Newport Bay a go on one of Davey's skiffs. I'll keep you updated.
