#773, "August 25, Goleta Pipe"

Well we left the float tubes at home and opted for the 12 ft. aluminum today. Brian #2 and Daniel and I all piled in there and rowed out to the pipe early this morning. We were packin plastics and iron and of course the fastrac. Daniel and I both hooked up on rockfish immediately and from there it only got better. We only got 3 rockfish, but the bass were almost wide. For me, it was every cast for about 5 or 10 min. Olive/gold plastic. The fish didn't have any size to em, most were barely legal, but it was a good time. I think I pulled 3 legals and a bunch of shorts and a legal sandie and two shorts, plus the rockfish. The bass weren't at all afraid of that little boat and were constantly either following up, or coming up with the hooked fish all the way to the point of where the fish was lifted out of the water. #2 had a 5 peck at his swimbait thrice, then follow to the boat and inhale it. Unfortunatley, for some reason he had his friggin drag buttoned and busted it off. Those bass were thick in there though. Keep in mind, all these fish are on straight plastic, no chum, no livebait, no squid. Just plastic. Incredible. It slowed down at around 9 (after two hours of mahem) so we decided to give it a rest and hit the outside of the inside kelp for seabass. Tried that, didn't get anything, tried halibut by the hut, nothing, so we started to oar back over to the pipe. #2 was rowing and one oarlock snapped. So, he started paddline with that one and Daniel started rowing with the remaining one. Then Daniel's broke like 5 min. later. We were cracking up soooooo hard. We managed to get to shore without killing ourselves and they ran and got #2's 2.5 hp outboard. We stuck that on there and jetted out to the pipe, but no more action. Tomorrow we're gonna chum it up a little and fish some squid and see if it'll go wide.
