#9255, "balboa bay report"

the plan was to go to Dana Point and follow the tips quietman has gave me so i could maybe get a cuda. but i found out last night that the harbor was gonna be packed with boats. its the festival of Whales. insted of Dana Point we hit Newport and fished 19th street dock from about 830 in morning till about 4 in afternoon. finally learned how to catch my own bait with sabiki rigs. got lots of smelt. one was way too big for bait so i cut it into big pieces for a bat ray. but no bat wanted it. i was hoping for a halibut but of course with my luck no takers. i had some nice sized smelt carolina rigged on 6lb flourocarbon. not even a short bite on the smelt. early around 930 my friend caught a legal sand bass on cut squid, about 13 in. we took out the raft but it seemed to be leaking so didnt raft too long. i tossed lures at the little beach next to the dock. wasnt having much luck until i met a float tuber named Mike. he was really nice and gave me a few lures to try out. one of the plastics he gave me was a kalin 3in grub in a kinda dark yellow color. tossed it out a few times and came out with a short spotty. after trying it a few more times it got snagged and i lost the great lure. going to san diego tomorrow for surf fishing, should be fun.

mike
